Downtown Madison is the city’s cultural hub

Downtown Madison puts the Wisconsin State Capitol, State Street retail, major artistic venues and diverse housing between lakes Mendota and Monona. Capitol Square and neighboring blocks serve as the center of Madison’s cultural and dining scenes. Landmarks like the Capitol and Orpheum theatres, abundant restaurant options and proximity to the University of Wisconsin – Madison contribute to Downtown’s vibrant atmosphere. Cyclists and joggers have access to ample bike lanes and sidewalks in addition to lakefront trails. Though housing supply is limited, homebuyers can choose to live in condos and vintage townhouses close to the downtown action.

Museums and events contribute to Downtown's artsy feel

Downtown is full of cultural institutions, from history museums like the Wisconsin Veterans Museum to century-old artistic venues. “We have Comedy on State—great comedy shows.” Muselman says. “We have the Overture, and we get some really great shows coming there. They have the running art fair in the summer. They have some events at Breese Stevens Field—craft fairs, concerts, things like that. Lots of races, triathlons, and events on the water. They do a ski show and things like that.” Other community favorites include Lunch Time Live summer concerts, the Cars on State Classic Car Show every June and the Shine On Madison holiday lighting festival around Thanksgiving.
