Convenience, community and a focus on sustainability
Junction Ridge is a large neighborhood on Madison’s far west side developed from Wisconsin farmland since the turn of the century. It is located to the south of Middleton, an affluent Madison suburb. “You’re not paying the Middleton prices,” says Ali Kane, a broker associate with Stark Company Realtors. “But you’re benefiting from being 2 minutes away from Greenway Station.” The neighborhood is now home to approximately 2,000 residents with a mix of housing options.
The Junction Ridge Neighborhood Association focuses on building community and promoting sustainability. Proximity to Middleton and the rest of Madison for shopping, dining and natural areas is another key element of Junction Ridge’s character. “It’s close to everything,” Kane says.
Apartments, condos, duplexes and single-family homes
The neighborhood was built in the early 2000s and features a mix of housing styles, including apartments, condos, duplexes and single-family homes. Junction Ridge is a huge area with several HOAs, condo associations and apartment complexes within its borders, according to Jennifer Ondrejka, a neighborhood association board member who has lived in Junction Ridge for 25 years. Depending on size and location, condos can cost from $200,000 up to $580,000. Single-family homes typically cost between approximately $350,000 and $550,000. Home styles include New Traditional and ranch homes, and others sport midcentury modern elements. Address usually feature attached garages and streets are dotted with wide sidewalks.

Bus lines on busy streets and direct routes to downtown Madison
Commuters can access Madison’s busy Beltline Highway, which borders the neighborhood to the east. University Avenue and Old Sauk Road provide direct paths to downtown and the University of Wisconsin’s campus, about 8 miles away. A UW Health clinic is in the neighborhood, along Junction Road, and the UW Health University Hospital is under 7 miles away east on University Avenue. The Dane County Regional Airport is 16 miles east. Bus lines run along Junction Road, Mineral Point Road and Old Sauk Road.
Community projects at Junction Ridge Park
The neighborhood association has worked hard to improve natural areas, including Junction Ridge Park. “It’s ginormous,” Kane says. “It’s a beautiful park.” The park began with basic amenities, like a playground and open fields. “But the association has raised money to put in all sorts of gardens and benches, and we’re still working toward building a gathering site that people can hang out in,” Ondrejka says. “It has become a much more friendly, open to all ages, kind of place now.”
The University of Wisconsin’s West Madison Agricultural Research Station takes up a large chunk of the neighborhood’s southwest corner, and the University Display Gardens provide a quiet area to explore and learn about flowers and crops. Wisconsin prairie is also accessible. “Amidst of our neighborhood, there’s something like 20 acres of prairie,” Ondrejka says. “You just have to know where the paths are to get in.”

Small plates and large wine selection at Eno Vino
Junction Ridge is right by several shopping options. “You don’t have to go downtown for shopping,” Ondrejka says. “We’re close to a shopping center, a Target and grocery and drug stores.” The grocery store, Metro Market, is next to Target within the neighborhood. Middleton’s Greenway Station shopping center is under 3 miles away. Madison’s west side is home to many chains, but local restaurants exist, too. “Right around the corner is Eno Vino with great small plates, very shareable,” Kane says. “Gloria’s Mexican Restaurant is also delightful. And there’s a pizza place called Novanta. Oh my gosh, I love Novanta.” Fitness buffs can exercise at Dragonfly Hot Yoga, Club Pilates or Alloy Personal Training, which opens at the end of 2024.

A focus on sustainability characterizes the neighborhood association
The neighborhood association emphasizes sustainability and creates programs encouraging residents to think in those terms. “We have an Earth Day event every year and an ongoing Bingo, where the squares are things like decreasing laundry loads or using a travel mug,” Ondrejka says. “If you get a bingo, you get a prize. The most recent prizes were solar table lamps.” The association also solicits tips and recipes and helps residents with transitioning to solar power, composting and other initiatives. “We also have an annual picnic, which is a social potluck,” Ondrejka says. “People come from all over the neighborhood for that.”
Middleton’s Good Neighbor Festival, three days of music, food, beer, craft fairs and parades, takes place toward the end of August each year.
