Established homes offer stylistic variety
Forestdale is largely residential, and much of it is single-family homes, as almost two thirds of the neighborhood residents are homeowners. Bi-levels, Colonial Revivals and Craftsman designs are typical home styles, and some pockets have additional variety, like a handful of Cape Cods on Blantyre Road or the blend of styles on Hill Street. Most homes were built decades ago , and the median build year in this area is 1932. Sidewalks and small, tidy lawns line the roads. Single-family homes can range in price from about $450,000 to $850,000, depending on size and level of upkeep, with recent renovations driving prices to the higher end. Alex Gentile Memorial Park, formerly Forestdale Park, sits next to Forestdale School and is home to a playground and baseball fields. Children from ages 3 to 5 can attend Malden Early Learning Center , which does not have a Niche rating. Forestdale School is the neighborhood elementary and middle school, serving students from kindergarten through eighth grade and earning a B-minus. Malden is home to events like the St. Rocco’s Feast, an annual event with vendors, processions and live music. “It’s around the second week in August,” Gennetti says. “It’s been going on for over 90 years.” Malden also runs a summer concert series at the high school courtyard. Within Forestdale, Halloween is a big deal. “Bainbridge Street comes up as a top destination for Halloween every year,” Gennetti says. “It’s huge over there.”Getting around by public transit, highways and the Northern Strand Trail
Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority bus routes crisscross the neighborhood. The Malden Center rail station, about a mile west of the neighborhood, offers service along the Orange Line and Haverhill Line, both connecting to Boston. Homes are no more than 5 miles from Interstate 93, and U.S. Route 1 runs near the neighborhood’s eastern edge. Boston Logan International Airport is about 7 miles away, while downtown Boston is about 9 miles away. The closest hospital is CHA Everett Hospital, about 3 miles from Forestdale. Residents can find shopping and dining options along Lebanon Street and Salem Street. King Bibis serves Brazilian food while Franny’s is a mellow diner. Malden House of Pizza has Forestdale covered for slices and delivery. Several convenience stores dot the area, and Stop & Shop is just over 2 miles from the farthest corner of the neighborhood. Downtown Malden is home to several local favorites, old and new, including longtime favorite Mystic Station and Thaiger Den, an upscale Thai eatery that opened recently.
