Linden Highlands: A Malden neighborhood alongside a major highway
As U.S. Route 1 winds northward from Boston, it forms the eastern edge of Linden Highlands. This neighborhood in Malden, Massachusetts, is tucked away between Route 1 and Broadway, one of Malden’s key streets. Although Linden Highlands is separate from Malden’s most prominent commercial hubs and parks, it’s one of the most convenient neighborhoods for commuting to Boston, a 9 mile drive to the south.
Small houses and condos on Malden’s east end
Split-level homes, Colonial Revivals and contemporary-style condo units line streets branching off Center Avenue and Broadway. Meanwhile, mobile homes are packed into a small community on the north end of Linden Highlands. Condos are priced in the $500,000s, while single-family prices vary from $500,000 to $1 million. The majority of people in the neighborhood rent, with apartment buildings filling out the center of Linden Highlands.
Shopping and dining at businesses on Broadway
Businesses line Broadway, a road where car dealerships and fast-food chains operate next to longstanding businesses such as Barbiero. The company has imported Italian food into the Boston area since 1958, and its only retail store is in Linden Highlands, carrying supplies from dry pasta to fresh meats. Broadway also features a pair of sports bars: Luxury Boxx and Six Twenty-One Tavern & Grill. Less than a mile south of the neighborhood is a Stop & Shop supermarket, while Lowe’s is within a mile of the neighborhood’s north end. Half a mile west of Linden Highlands, about a dozen shops and restaurants cluster around Salem Street and Lebanon Street in an area known as Maplewood Square.
Houses are close to Malden Public Schools
Kindergartners through eighth graders can attend Linden STEAM Academy, a public school across the street from Linden Highlands. Graded a B by Niche, the school emphasizes project-based learning, utilizing facilities such as a robotics lab and a makerspace. It’s less than 2 miles to Malden High School, scored a B-plus. Malden Catholic gets an A-plus, and the private high school is less than a mile outside of Linden Highlands.
Sports at Linden Park, cycling on the Northern Strand Trail
The neighborhood is next to Linden Park; softball diamonds cover most of the city-owned green space, with a playground, roller hockey rink and basketball court clustered on the north end. Just south of Linden Park, cyclists can hop on the Northern Strand Trail. The paved bike route runs between the cities of Lynn and Everett, connecting Linden Highlands to the Malden Center neighborhood that’s about 2 miles west. Malden Center is home to many of the town’s restaurants and cafes. Winter brings subfreezing temperatures and occasional snowfall, but Town Line Luxury Lanes provides the neighborhood with an indoor hangout for bowling, pool and arcade games.
A pair of churches stand side by side
Founded in 1930, Freedom Hill Community Church has been in Liden Highlands since the ‘80s. The church’s food pantry gives out groceries every Tuesday evening, serving hundreds of households annually. Next door, Rehoboth Grace Ethiopian Evangelical Church Boston holds Sunday service and Bible studies throughout the week.
Highway and trains connect commuters to Boston
Residents have quick access to U.S. Route 1, located on the neighborhood’s east side. It provides a direct route to Boston, a drive that can take up to an hour during rush hour, but it also means a fair amount of noise for houses next to the highway. Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority buses stop along Broadway and Salem Street, taking passengers to Malden Center, where MBTA trains stop on their way to and from North Station in Boston.
