Linden
Neighborhood in Malden, Massachusetts
Middlesex County 02148
Century-old homes and lots of renters
Houses built between the late 1800s and early 1900s sit on compact lots along Linden’s sidewalk-lined streets. Styles include bungalows, Colonial Revivals and Queen Annes. Mid-20th century split levels and Cape Cod cottages are also common. Above-ground power lines stretch over houses, which typically have three to five bedrooms. Some properties have driveways and alleyway lots, but street parking is also common. A few apartment complexes are in the area, and Atria Maplewood Place is a retirement community on Broadway. Though half of residents are renters, buying here typically costs between $550,000 and $875,000. That range is higher than the national median home price.Northern Strand Community Trail is expanding to Nahant Beach
The 10-mile-long Northern Strand Community Trail spans Linden’s core. Locals can walk, bike and rollerblade along the paved path, stretching through other towns like Revere, Saugus and Lynn. Gennetti says locals often use the trail to reach Rumney Marsh Reservation, less than a mile east. “I’ve seen people walking on the trail with fishing poles, and they’re always headed to Rumney Marsh.” More hiking trails weave amid salt marshes at the 600-acre reservation, where anglers can catch striped bass and flounder, and kayakers and canoers will find several boat launches. The community trail will eventually reach Nahant Beach, 7 miles east. However, the expansion isn’t supposed to be complete until 2026. Linden residents can find other oceanfront spots, like Revere Beach, less than 4 miles in the same direction. The area has several houses of worship, ranging from Christian denominations to Islamic mosques. The Holy Cross Cemetery has been around since 1868 and takes up around 180 acres in the southern part of Linden.Linden STEAM Academy is in the neighborhood
Children can attend Linden STEAM Academy for kindergarten through eighth grade. The school earns a B from Niche, and Gennetti says kids often walk to school. “The sidewalks basically flood with kids walking to and from school every day. That walkability is one of the main reasons people move here.” She adds that the school is also busy when class isn’t in session. “I’ll drive past it on the weekend and see tons of kids on the playground. It’s basically the neighborhood park.” Students may continue to B-plus-rated Malden High, which offers dual enrollment classes with Bunker Hill Community College.Reach Boston via Route 1, MBTA bus or the Orange Line
Local traffic may slow down before and after school, as there are speed limits and crosswalks near the building. Boston is a 9-mile drive south on Route 1. The drive can take 20 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic. Despite this proximity, Gennetti says most locals hop on a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority bus, and ride it to the Malden Center train station, less than 3 miles east. “People will do that instead of dealing with traffic on Route 1 or trying to park their cars at the station.” The station services the MBTA’s Orange Line, typically reaching Boston in less than 15 minutes. The Boston Logan International Airport is 6 miles south, and the MelroseWakefield Hospital is less than 3 miles north.Linden has grocery stores, industrial spaces and a pizza joint
Linden is home to several auto repair shops, a Harley Davidson dealer and industrial warehouses, including an Amazon fulfillment center. Locals can grab a few necessities at Walgreens and pick up groceries at Stop & Shop, both located in the neighborhood’s southeastern corner. Though few restaurants are in the area, Gennetti says Nonni’s Pizza and Grill on Washington Avenue is a local staple. “It’s just a take-out spot, but it’s the kind of place where they remember your name when you walk in.” Northgate Shopping Center, less than 2 miles east, has stores like Market Basket and Burlington. Cozy pubs and Asian restaurants fill Federal-style buildings in downtown Malden, about 2 miles west.
