Leaving busy NYC for laidback Lafayette Mills
After COVID-19 hit, people wanted to leave the crowded streets of New York City for more spacious residential areas. Some found the answer in Manalapan Township, particularly neighborhoods like Lafayette Mills. Gail Szeluga and JoAnna Siminerio are Realtors with Coldwell Banker Realty who have helped homebuyers make the transition south for over 20 years. “Most people come from New York, and we see teachers, for example, who keep their jobs there and commute,” Siminerio says.
Lafayette Mills is close to popular destinations like Monmouth County Library Headquarters and shops along U.S. Route 9. Other popular spots are a short drive away, like the Monmouth Battlefield State Park and Freehold Raceway Mall. Lafayette Mills offers a balance between being close to recreation and shopping while having a quiet place to return to after work.
Award-winning schools throughout town
Schools are highly regarded in Manalapan Township, and many schools within the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District have been named Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence. Some students attend Lafayette Mills School, which earns an A-minus from Niche. Manalapan-Englishtown Middle School, also rated A-minus, is usually the next step before transferring to the A-minus-rated Manalapan High School. Manalapan High offers magnet programs students can apply to join. Lafayette Mills also falls in the Monmouth County Vocational School District, which is unrated by Niche. “The schools aren’t easy to get into," Szeluga says. "You have to test to get in."
Lafayette Mills Elementary School has a free library as well as a seating area for students.
At the Manalapan High School students may expect to have opportunities for extracurricular activities such as team sports and music.

Route 9 leads to New York and Newark Liberty Airport
When it’s time for work, many commuters travel to New York City by taking Route 9 to the Garden State Parkway. “Traffic used to be really bad, even with the parkway,” Szeluga says. “Since COVID, people have been working from home, and the traffic has slowed down.” Lafayette Mills is about 50 miles from Manhattan and the drive can take over an hour. Newark Liberty International Airport is closer, about 35 miles away and a 40-minute drive. NJ Transit buses run throughout Manalapan Township, though the nearest bus stops are along Route 9 and Taylors Mills Road.
Shopping for groceries and dining out along Route 9
Route 9 is Manalapan Township’s main commercial corridor, which lines Lafayette Mills’ eastern border. The Manalapan EpiCentre has a Target and Wegmans. Locally owned restaurants like Manalapan Diner also line Route 9, but some residents drive down Tennent Road to visit Olde Silver Tavern for dinner or happy hour. Siminerio says the restaurant has been in the area for a while and used to have sawdust all over the floor. A fire damaged the restaurant, and new owners brought the restaurant into a new era with renovations in 2024. The Freehold Raceway Mall is the third-largest mall in New Jersey and is about 4 miles south of Lafayette Mills. While malls across America are in decline, the Freehold Raceway Mall has most of its storefronts filled with popular stores, and a Dave & Busters is on the way.
The Manalapan Diner is just across Route 9 from the Lafayette Mills neighborhood and has classic delicious diner fare.

Hanging out at Monmouth County Library Headquarters
Throughout the year, residents visit the Manalapan Recreation Center to use the playground, baseball fields, football field or splash pad. Monmouth County Library Headquarters has a rotating calendar of monthly events, and the building is often busy when the weather drops below freezing and residents want something to do in the warmth. "The library does little events," Szeluga says. "I was there last Saturday, and the lower level was packed. I think it was because it was cold out and supposed to snow."

Manalapan Day and Battle of Monmouth Reenactments
Cold weather doesn’t stop some residents from walking their dogs around Monmouth Battlefield State Park. The park is especially busy in June when history buffs participate in the annual Battle of Monmouth Reenactment. During the event, actors hold fake duels, vendors sell food, and visitors follow in the footsteps of past soldiers by walking around 25 miles of trails. Old Tennent Presbyterian Church was built in the early 1700s and was used as a hospital during the Battle at Monmouth. Services are still held in the church today. Manalapan Day is another June event, though this celebration is less about history and more about family fun. Residents across Manalapan Township visit the Manalapan Recreation Center for carnival rides, live music and evening fireworks.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
