Condos and Houses along Calef Road
Many homes here have Cape Cod-inspired designs, along with some ranch styles and split-levels. Many are situated on half-acre lots and were constructed between the 1950s and the 1970s. Many houses have views of the countryside from the front or back porch, and some are within sight of the Merrimack River, which can drive up the price. Single-family homes here tend to run from $250,000 to $500,000. Several condos and apartments are located along Calef Road. Prices for these can range from $150,000 to $210,000.Disc golf, trails and playsets along the Merrimack River
There are several parks in and around the Highlands community. Barbara Shaw Park is close to many homes and offers a baseball diamond and a playset for families to enjoy. Smaller parks can be found in the center of the community, with Sullivan Family Park offering another playground and a small walking path. Hollows Disc Golf Course is behind the Pine Grove Cemetery and has two different courses that wind through rolling hills and towering trees. Hikers and bikers can use the Londonderry Rail Trail that borders the neighborhood to the east, which is part of a larger expanse of paved trails for both exercise and commuting. “The trail is popular among runners and bikers,” says Barna. “And it connects with other rail trails, which is nice for those looking to trek longer distances.”Public and private Manchester schools
Students can start their education at Highland-Goffes Falls School, which earns a C-minus rating on Niche, before continuing to Southside Middle School, which also scores a C-minus. The final stop for many students is the C-plus-rated Manchester Memorial High School, home of the Crusaders, which is well known for its athletics program, especially its hockey team. The Highland community is also home to the Mount Zion Christian School, a private Kindergarten through 12th-grade school that earns a B-plus rating and is ranked as one of the top three private K-12 schools in the Manchester area by Niche.
Comicon and cultural festivals
Residents of Highlands are just a hop, skip and a jump from annual festivals and conventions. One of the largest events downtown is the Granite State Comicon, which takes place on the third weekend of September and is full of cosplayers, vendors and artists from around the world. Recent guests include Kevin Eastman, one of the co-creators of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The city also hosts the We Are One Festival in August, a combination of Latino and African cultural festivals in one massive celebration with demonstrations, music and food throughout the whole day in Veterans Memorial Park.
Convenient Manchester roads and sidewalks
Highland’s commuting access is one of the major reasons for the neighborhood's growth. Calef Road and Beech Street are the main residential thoroughfares for cars and the Manchester Transit Authority buses, connecting residents to the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport to the south and downtown Manchester to the north. Interstate 293 roars along the southern end of the neighborhood, allowing for travel to the shopping and dining options all around Manchester. Daily steps and walks downtown are also easy, with almost every street in the community lined with sidewalks. The Catholic Medical Center is 5 miles away in downtown Manchester.Retro and barbeque bites
Dining and shopping options can be found just outside the neighborhood, with one of the more famous spots being the Airport Diner. This 50’s style eatery has a number of diner classics, from jukeboxes playing old hits to freshly made pies and a number of sandwiches. The restaurant’s placement next to a hotel, along with its proximity to the airport, makes it popular with tourists and locals. Residents can also dine inside or out on the patio at KC's Rib Shack. Hannaford and Aldi are nearby grocery stores.
