Victorian charm in a city that refuses to die
Manchester’s residential North End is grassy and quaint, with Victorian-era architecture and deciduous trees shedding red, orange and yellow leaves in the fall. It’s so quiet and feels so suburban that it’s easy to forget that it’s part of a gritty, post-industrial metropolis widely known as the city that refuses to die.
Innovative architecture, from Queen Annes to Frank Lloyd Wright pieces
The neighborhood consists of paved residential streets with dark grey sidewalks and colonials sitting behind green, sometimes hilly, front lawns. Trees shade the neighborhood’s cute, compact homes with accoutrements like stone front porches, Doric columns and gardens so big that they shield houses from the road. Thoroughfares like Union Street and River Road link the neighborhood to downtown and to highways like U.S. Route 3. Sidewalks make dog walking and jogging easy, and most houses have driveways. New Hampshirites are known for their bluntness, for not beating around the bush, but they do it with a little more softness in the North End than in other parts of town, says Cody Barna, Realtor with eXp Realty serving New Hampshire.
The North End is considered one of Manchester’s most desirable neighborhoods. Colonials with freshly painted black shutters, ranch-style houses outfitted with shingles and Victorian homes, including Queen Anne-style residences with turrets, can be found here. “The appeal is the appearance of the houses and the types of architecture,” says Barna. “It’s a unique area of Manchester.” Most of the neighborhood’s land has already been built upon, giving it an air of exclusivity. People buy homes and tend to pass them from one generation to the next, says Barna. Prices range from $235,000 to $1 million. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian-style Zimmerman House, owned by the Currier Museum of Art, sits within the neighborhood.
Monument to "Live free or die"
Across the street from a brick section of sidewalk on River Road is Stark Park, named after Revolutionary War General John Stark, a native of nearby Londonderry. Sledding happens here in the wintertime, and when the snow melts, neighbors enjoy quiet walks with their dogs on the park’s paved pathway. Neighbors plant seeds in the community garden and sit in the gazebo when they need to kick back. A statue of Stark riding a horse with his sword hoisted in the air is also here. Stark is credited with New Hampshire’s motto, “Live free or die.” Kids play weekend soccer games at Livingston Park, which has a baseball diamond, a running area and a pool. Dorrs Pond is a popular spot for fishing and ice skating in the wintertime.
Dumplings, Dunkin and artisan cheese
The North End is primarily residential, so most grocery stores and restaurants are minutes away. But for gourmet goodies like artisan cheeses and wine, there’s Angela’s Pasta & Cheese Shop. Inside the glass case at Angela’s, locals will see things like ravioli, panini and stuffed shells. Pizza shops and chain restaurants like Dunkin sit along U.S. Route 3, which forms the North End’s southern border. Dumplings and chow mein are on the menu at Wow Momo and More. Downtown, with its taphouses, cafes and performing arts venues, is a 5-minute drive. “Manchester as a whole is not very large,” says Barna. “You can easily drive to downtown.”
Manchester schools and revered private institution
Kids in the North End can attend Webster Elementary School, a Manchester public school with a C-minus rating from Niche, serving kindergarten through fifth grade. After elementary school, kids can move on to Hillside Middle School (rated C-minus) and Central High School (rated B). There’s also The Derryfield School, a private day school for grades 6-12 with about 400 students.
Getting around New Hampshire's largest city
Manchester is the largest city in New Hampshire, so it’s easy to get around. Interstate 93 runs through the city providing drivers with an easy link to Boston (45 minutes away) and Concord (20 minutes away). Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, which provides air service to places like Chicago and Tampa, is a 15-minute drive from the North End. Most neighbors get around by driving, although city buses are available through the Manchester Transit Authority.
