Hamilton Heights
Urban Core Neighborhood in Manhattan, New York
New York County 10031, 10032
Trendy restaurants join well-trafficked watering holes
Main thoroughfare Broadway has an endless offering of eateries and bars. Cozy pub Harlem Public, comfort food staple The Handpulled Noodle and ice cream go-to Sugar Hill Creamery are popular among students attending nearby Columbia University and The City College of New York. “There are more grown-up options too,” says lifelong Hamilton Heights resident Dale Dobson. “Recently opened restaurant ROKC has truly authentic Japanese food. Also new, Chez Messy is great for tapas. My regular spot is Italian mainstay Bono Trattoria.” New locales are constantly popping up. Though just under a decade old, 1970s-style The Honey Well bar seems to have been around forever. Grocery stores Food Universe Marketplace and Key Food stock all the essentials.Direct access to the Hudson River Greenway
The Denny Farrell pedestrian bridge overpasses the Henry Hudson Parkway to connect West 151st Street with the Hudson River Greenway, a bike and walking path spanning the entire length of Manhattan. “There’s a touch of uninterrupted nature over here,” says Dobson. Further south in the neighborhood, Riverbank State Park has a riverfront pool, up-to-date playground, Carousel and ample sports facilities.Old-school luxury and Hudson River views for less
Like much of Riverside Drive—a leafy boulevard stretching from the Upper West Side to Washington Heights–Hamilton Heights features upscale prewar condominiums and co-ops with ornate architectural details. On this “Gold Coast” stretch, buyers can choose from individually named Beaux Arts and Art Nouveau-inspired buildings. While two bedrooms cost $700,000, classic sixes and sevens are priced from $1.9 Million to $3.5 Million. It’s good value compared to similar river-facing properties on the Upper West Side that start at $6 Million. Art Deco-style walk-up buildings dominate the rest of the neighborhood, with co-op and condo units sold for $275,000 to $875,000, depending on income restriction policies, size and proximity to the Hudson River. Neo-Federalist brick townhomes, especially those on or around secluded street Hamilton Terrace, fetch between $2 Million and $3.5 Million.
Good Transit Links downtown and out of town
The 1 local subway runs beneath Broadway with stops at West 137th Street, West 145th Street and West 157th Street. It connects to 2 and 3 downtown express lines at West 96th Street. With the nearby Henry Hudson Parkway, Hamilton Heights has quick connections out of town. Some of the best schools in New York State
Young Hamilton Heights residents can attend Upper Manhattan’s top-performing public and public charter schools. Students might begin at PS 153 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Elementary School, with a B-minus from Niche and a separate gifted and talented program. They can move on to C-plus-rated Hamilton Grange Middle School, one of only four schools in the area named by Teach for America as Schools to Learn From in 2019. The specialized, A-plus-rated High School for Mathematics, Science, and Engineering at City College has been awarded as the best public high school in the state.
