Brick townhouses and tree-lined streets
Harlem’s Strivers’ Row has a cinematic feel, with its tree-lined streets of landmarked brick townhouses built in the 1890s. Also known as St. Nicholas Historic District, Strivers’ Row includes 117 three-story homes designed by some of the most influential architects of the late 19th century for Manhattan’s elite. “They really take you back to that era. You feel like you’re on a movie set,” says Tay Tiwoni of the Corcoran Group, a Harlem native who has been selling real estate in the area for 16 years. Just east of St. Nicholas Park, the larger neighborhood also has more typical brownstones and newer condo buildings, plus upscale dining options and easy transportation throughout the city.

Harlem’s historic townhouses and brownstones
Strivers’ Row homes have three distinct styles, including red brick Georgian revivals, brown brick Italian Renaissance revivals and Georgian-style yellow brick homes along West 138th and West 139th streets. Built as luxury residences, the townhouses featured space for horses and carriages via a back alley which still allows for private parking. It wasn’t until the 1920s that middle-class leaders of the Black community—nicknamed strivers—moved into the residences, giving the community its name. Today, the townhouses start at around $2 million, fetching up to $4.2 million with modern kitchens and bathrooms. Smaller units sell for $750,000 to $950,000. There are also brownstones in the larger neighborhood for about $3 million, and HDFC co-ops with income restrictions are common. The neighborhood is peppered with condo buildings, such as The Rennie, a modern mid-rise development on the site of Harlem’s historic Renaissance Ballroom and Casino, which was demolished in 2015 after sitting empty for decades. Condo residences range from around $550,000 for a one bedroom to $960,000 for a three-bedroom.

‘Hamilton’ history in St. Nicholas Park
St. Nicholas Park is a five-minute walk from Strivers’ Row, providing a place where locals can let their dogs loose at the dog run, play volleyball, handball and basketball or walk around its paths. “City College, with its amazing neo-gothic architectural design, sits on top of the park and you can see all of this from Strivers’ Row,” Tiwoni says. The Hamilton Grange National Memorial—a historic home and museum built for Alexander Hamilton—is also located in the park. “Since the musical ‘Hamilton’ has taken the world by storm, that’s become a huge tourist attraction,” Tiwoni says. Harlem Grown Urban Farm, a community garden, is at the edge of the neighborhood on West 135th Street.
Internationally inspired dining on Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard

Groceries can be found at Key Food on Frederick Douglass Boulevard, while Harlem’s main shopping corridor along West 125th Street is a 15-minute walk.
