Ranch-style houses and cabins on large parcels of land
Area homes do not go on the market often. The ones that do can be older ranch-style residences that range from $175,000 to $250,000. Cabins with more modern interiors can go from $375,000 to $532,000. Properties are often far from one another. While the area’s main highways are well paved, community streets are often dirt or gravel and surrounded by thick woods. It is a car-dependent area with few streetlights. The region has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.Hunting, fishing and ATV riding, plus a nearby library
The region has staggered hunting times. Deer season is open Dec. 5-Jan. 12 if using a firearm, while ducks are open from November through January on specific days. “My son and I do a lot of hunting through the National Wild Turkey Federation’s local chapter, and my grandsons are in a fishing club,” says Bill Smith, who has worked at the DeSoto Parish Library’s Mansfield branch for more than 15 years. The library has free WiFi service and provides programming for children and teenagers. Oak Ridge Park is a nearly 120-acre space where people can go camping, fishing or boating on Toledo Bend Reservoir. Jolly Roger Marina has cabins and RV sites for rent, plus a pier and a bait and tackle shop for anglers. Nearby, the Cow Bayou Wilderness Area is home to the region’s only official ATV trails, which stretch for about 7 miles. There are several churches in the area, including Old Union Church. All area students attend Stanley High School
Students are served by DeSoto Parish Schools. They can attend Stanley High School, which teaches students from kindergarten through 12th grade. In 2025, it received a new student activities center with a state-of-the-art gymnasium. It also renovated its classrooms, among other changes. The school holds a B-minus Niche grade.Close to major highways, but with a chance of tornadoes
A stretch of U.S. Route 84 is the region’s northern border, while U.S. Route 171 is the eastern edge. Mansfield, the nearest city, is close to 15 miles from the area’s center. The community is around 50 miles from Shreveport Regional Airport. The area is susceptible to tornadoes; one caused substantial damage to Beulah Baptist Church in 2024. Hurricanes can also affect the region.Travel to Mansfield for eateries and a Walmart Supercenter
Hunter-Lula does not have any restaurants or stores of its own. In Mansfield, Billy B’s Cajun Grill has New Orleans-inspired entrees. “That’s the finer dining in town, if there is any fine dining,” Smith says. Southern Classic Chicken is a Louisiana-based fried chicken chain. Great Wall Buffet has an all-you-can-eat option as well as a traditional menu. Brookshire’s sells groceries, while Walmart Supercenter fills most retail needs. More extensive shopping can be done in Shreveport, about 50 miles north.
