Oxford-Pelican is a rural community with access to nearby cities
Oxford-Pelican is a rural expanse in DeSoto Parish. Encompassing the villages of Oxford and Pelican as well as the vast space around them, the region is a place where homeowners can find a secluded residence. “It’s a small community, but it’s unified,” says Ann Evans, who has worked as a clerk at the DeSoto Parish Library Pelican Branch for nearly 40 years. “There's camaraderie with the people here. It’s home.” Neighboring cities have commercial centers that residents can visit for shopping and dining, as well as a school system.

Ranch-style homes and cabins, plus land for development
Area houses are not put up for sale often, but some can be found scattered throughout the region. Ranch-style homes can range from $130,000 to $150,000. Cottages and cabins often go from $230,000 to $530,000. Main highways are well paved, but side streets can be narrow and made from dirt or gravel. The car-dependent community does not have sidewalks, and streetlights are rare. There is plenty of room in the wooded region for new developments. Large parcels of land can usually be found for around $4,000 to $5,000 per acre. The community has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.

Hunting seasons and Civil War sites, plus the DeSoto Parish Library Pelican Branch
Hunting is a popular pastime in the region. Deer season runs Dec. 5-Jan. 12 if using a firearm, while duck season is open from November through January on specific days. A reenactment of The Battle of Pleasant Hill is held in the community each spring at Pleasant Hill Battle Park. Historical markers on site display letters written by Civil War generals and news clippings from before and after the clash. A few miles north of the area is the Mansfield State Historic Site, another former Civil War skirmish site with exhibits, a hiking trail and a pavilion. Pelican United Methodist Church serves the southern part of the region, and Mt. Olive Baptist Church is toward the north. Other churches are in the surrounding area.
The DeSoto Parish Library Pelican Branch has programming for teenagers and free Wi-Fi service. Evans says the library gets up to 15 visitors each day, many of whom are there for something other than books. “We have a cooking program where someone will come in to demonstrate how to make a special dish or a drink, and people like that,” Evans says.
