Small-town feel with big-city amenities in Maple Shade Township
A straight 10-mile jaunt east of Center City, Maple Shade Township welcomes residents who prefer a quieter life with a simple commute. “Our slogan says it best: Nice town, friendly people,” says the township’s former mayor Steven Schmidt. “People who don’t want to live in Philly will come to Maple Shade. I’ve had the opportunity to leave, but I didn’t.” This leafy South Jersey suburb may feel like a small Main Street town, but the area also offers a desirable location between shopping centers and major highways. "We’re nestled between two highway corridors, Routes 73 and 38, with easy access to the bridges into Philadelphia and the New Jersey Turnpike,” says Jennifer Nixon, Director of Business & Economic Development who has lived in Maple Shade her whole life. In addition to being commuter-friendly, the community prides itself on looking out for one another. This know-your-neighbor atmosphere, Schmidt notes, can be seen through the residents’ willingness to help each other, a willingness that is also reflected in the township’s municipal services. “We have an open-door policy. Residents should be able to get the help they need, whenever they need it.”
Community events at Gazebo Park on Main Street
Centrally located in Maple Shade Township is Gazebo Park. “It’s kind of the heart of Maple Shade,” Nixon says. “The town is divided into four quadrants around this park, and it’s the meeting spot for the community.” The park is easily identifiable by the brass clock that stands guard, made and donated by a Maple Shade resident. “We hold all types of events there,” Nixon says. “Like a giant dog parade with pup vendors and adopting agencies where people parade through the park with their dogs. Then the crowd votes for their favorite, and the dog gets a cute trophy with a paw print on it.” The township also hosts events in a few different locations around town, including outdoor concerts at Collins Park, truck and car shows along Main Street, craft festivals and a roving farmers market. “Main Street hosts food truck nights, and our economic development team has put together a farmers market that pops up all over town.”

Main Street diners and pizzerias, Cherry Hill shopping and grocers
Main Street, a two-lane road that runs through the center of town, is dotted with a variety of commercial storefronts, niche boutiques and eateries. “We joke that Maple Shade has so many pizza places per square capita,” Nixon says. “Your favorite pizza place depends on what mood you’re in or what kind of pizza you want.” Always a popular option, Tacconelli’s Pizzeria is known to draw in people from outside of the community. Another local favorite, Maple Hill Restaurant is a family-run diner that serves breakfast all day. For dessert, Maple Shade Custard Stand is a classic drive-in ice cream spot. Also located on Main Street is Our Lady of Perpetual Help, a Catholic church. “They’re our biggest parish,” Nixon says. “They invite the community to different events, like Easter egg hunts and trunk-or-treats.”
Larger shopping excursions are well within reach, as Maple Shade Township is situated between the Cherry Hill Mall and the Moorestown Mall. In addition to department stores, chain restaurants and an AMC movie theater, the busy commercial section around Cherry Hill Mall features Trader Joe’s and Wegman’s. On the east side of town, the Moorestown Mall area also has department stores and a Regal movie theater, as well as Cooper University Health Care, a full-service hospital that opened in 2023.

Smaller 1950s ranch-style homes and larger Colonial-style properties
Maple Shade Township’s residential streets are lined with sidewalks in somewhat of a grid pattern, and single-family houses originally built in the 1950s sit on lots that are typically larger than those found in the surrounding neighborhoods. “A lot of my clients here are people transitioning out of living from Philadelphia or downtown Camden,” says Luis Ortiz, an agent with Berkshire Hathaway Fox & Roach. “They usually look here when they want a bigger home with a basement and a good-sized front or backyard.” Quaint bungalows and ranch-style homes, typically between 1,000 and 1,500 square feet in size, can cost between $225,000 and $350,000. Larger and oftentimes newer 1,500- to 3,000-square-foot Cape Cods and Colonial-inspired styles generally range from $350,000 to about $550,000. There are also one-and two-bedroom condominium options constructed in the 1970s with units priced between $175,000 and $225,000.
For those looking for a one story option, ranch style homes are very common in Maple Shade Township.

Athletics at Woodlawn Sports Complex and the town's green initiatives
Each school in the Maple Shade School District features playgrounds or athletic fields that provide a familiar place for township children to play near their homes. Youth sports are huge in town, and the Woodlawn Sports Complex hosts many local games and tournaments. There are football and soccer fields, and a collection of baseball and softball diamonds. On the south side of the sports complex, the Maple Shade Street Hockey court is home to the local youth hockey league. “Parents are very involved in youth sports,” Schmidt says. “You don’t find too many sitting on the benches. They’re in the concession stands or out there coaching. I’ve even been the baseball coach.”
Sustainable Maple Shade, a charitable community organization, aims to bring a green mindset to the township. The team plans and executes sustainability initiatives, including implementing a community garden on the north side of the Woodlawn Sports Complex. They host clean-up days, clothes swaps and backyard composting days, in addition to showcasing public art through murals and painting contests.
