Maplewood wraps around Saint Paul, sometimes blurring the edges between the two cities. However, a major employer and an abundance of outdoor recreation help set this suburb apart. The area has also grown into a shopping hub, with Maplewood Mall and several big-box stores scattered across the community. Interstate 94 makes it easy to commute to the Twin Cities.
You’ll find a mix of New Traditional homes and mid-20th-century architecture, such as split-level and ranch-style houses. There are also several townhouses and condos available. Most of the residential pockets have a more classic suburban feel, with close-together properties along wide streets and in cul-de-sacs. However, Realtor Samuel Boatman with Re/Max Results, who has almost a decade of experience, says, “There are little hidden pockets of town, like in South Maplewood – where I found my home – that are wooded and feel private, but are still close to everything.” Prices generally range from the mid-$100,000s to the low $700,000s, with a median single-family home price in the high $200,000s. It is significantly less expensive than nearby suburbs like Oakdale and Roseville.
Part of Maplewood’s appeal is its layout, wrapping around the Greater East Side of Saint Paul. “There are certain sections where you have no idea if you’re in Maplewood or Saint Paul unless you look up at the street sign,” says Maplewood communications manager Joe Sheeran. You can reach Downtown Saint Paul in about 5 miles (15 minutes) by taking Interstate 94. Downtown Minneapolis is about 15 miles (30 minutes) away. Public transportation is available, with Metro Transit buses stopping at the Maplewood Mall Transit Center. Maplewood and the Twin Cities also have an extensive trail system, so you’ll see locals riding their bikes.
While there are plenty of commuters, there are just as many employment opportunities within Maplewood itself. “We have a tiny little company you might’ve heard of; you use it for your scotch tape and sandpaper,” Sheeran says. “By a quirk in the mapping, we became home to 3M.” There are about 10,000 employees at the company’s headquarters.
Even with its major employers and its proximity to Saint Paul, Maplewood has no shortage of outdoor recreation. “Our goal is to have a park or preserve within a half a mile walking distance of everyone,” Sheeran says. Some of the options are:
Most homes fall within the North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District, which receives a B-minus from Niche. Students can attend the B-rated Tartan High School, where they can earn college credit thanks to concurrent enrollment and College in the Schools courses. A small part of Maplewood is zoned for the Roseville Public School District, which has an A-minus rating.
