Bungalows, Nationals and ranches along Center City's streets
All down Center City’s long thoroughfares, bungalows and Nationals line the streets. Weeds poke through the sidewalks at some points, and the occasional mature tree offers a spot of shade for pedestrians. Without more trees, the streets have a more wide and open feel than more condensed parts of Marion, like downtown. Some homes can feature up to half an acre, providing plenty of space while still living within city limits and so close to downtown. Homes typically sell between $15,000 and $80,000, though some properties might need some additional investment and care before they are ready to move in.Cooling off in the summer at Marion Splash House
Just a block outside Center City, Marion citizens can float down the lazy river or drop down the slide at Marion Splash House. The city’s water park is open Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends, with lifeguards posted over the water. Running through the neighborhood and past the water park is the Cardinal Greenway Trail. This paved walking and biking trail stretches across Indiana for 62 miles between Marion and Richmond. It also passes Hogin Park, where groups can play on the volleyball and bocce courts or just sit under the pergolas and enjoy the outdoors. Young and experienced skaters can practice tricks at the skate park.Earning early high school credit at McCulloch Junior High
Center City students can attend Frances Slocum Elementary School for kindergarten through fourth grade, which receives a C from Niche. For fifth and sixth grades, students attend Justice Thurgood Marshall Intermediate School, which earns a C-plus from Niche. John L. McCulloch Junior High School receives a C from Niche and allows students to enroll in high school classes early to get ahead. Marion High School earns a B from Niche and is listed as the 12th most diverse public high school in Indiana.Fall festivals and historical reenactments by Matter Park
The city of Marion is still working to build up downtown’s culture, but some regular events engage the community. “They have First Fridays downtown and there’s booze and entertainment every month,” Jenks says. Across the city in Matter Park, Marion Fall Festival features Halloween costume competitions and carnival games. A hayride runs through the park, so visitors can take in the fall colors. In the evening, people gather around the bonfire and roast marshmallows. One mile down the road from downtown Marion
While Washington Street heads into the neighborhood, residents can drive up Adams or Boots streets to get to downtown Marion, just 1 mile away. These two thoroughfares also connect the community with Marion Health Family Medicine Center, about 1.5 miles away, closer to the Mississinewa River. Because there isn’t any public transportation servicing this area, residents mainly depend on their cars, though the Greenway does offer an alternative route for people to get to the parks in Center City. When traveling beyond Marion, Indianapolis International Airport is 81 miles south in Indianapolis.Marion's local coffee and bike shops near Center City
“You’ve got dining, but not fine dining. It’s got a Walmart and a Meijer, and all the fast food restaurants,” says Realtor Sally Jenks with RE/MAX Realty One. “But if you want more diversity, you’re 40 minutes away from other towns.” Still, the areas around Center City have plenty to offer residents, especially along Western Avenue. In the morning, Abbey Coffee Co offers an outdoor patio with a firepit where people can sip their coffee and wake up. The coffeehouse offers student discounts, so Indiana Wesleyan University students often come here to study. Right next door, Jay’s Thai Marion serves classic Thai fare along with Thai tea with boba pearls. Also along Western Avenue are Marion’s main supermarkets—Walmart and Meijer are both within 2.5 miles of Center City. For something closer, Horner’s Butcher Block is 1.5 miles east of Center City. In downtown Marion, Marion Cycle Works offers new gear and tune ups to cyclists.
