Foster's proximity to Marion's parks and one of its warehouses
Foster may be on the far northeastern side of Marion, but residents live alongside Marion’s major parks. With the river just to the west, residents can stop along the banks to fish in the waters, or they cross the Highland Avenue bridge to head to Marion’s biggest park—Matter Park, which stretches over 100 acres. Still, Foster isn’t completely recreational. The bottom half of the neighborhood is Spartan Logistics’ warehouse. Sally Jenks, a local broker with RE/MAX Realty One, highlights that, while distribution and manufacturing employers have declined their presence in Marion in recent years, they are still larger industries for the areas. Foster residents can live close to work, while also enjoying the recreational green space outside of work.
Butterfly gardens and inclusive playgrounds at Matter Park
Families like to bring their kids to Matter Park for the playgrounds, which have fences encircling them to keep kids safe and inclusive playground equipment. People can also stroll through the 6 acres of butterfly gardens, and many residents come here for their wedding, prom and homecoming pictures. On the opposite side of the river, River’s Edge Family Golf Center offers mini-golf, but also has seasonal activities in colder months. “It’s great for fall,” Jenks says. “You can take the kids and pick out pumpkins or take a hayride.” Golfers can also head to Marion Elks Lodge and Golf Course to play along its sprawling green.

Seasonal activities and traditions at Matter Park
As such a large public space in Marion, Matter Park hosts multiple city events. People can take hayrides around the space for Marion Fall Festival and roast s’mores around the campfire in the evening. Locals vendors come with fall-themed goodies to form the Fall Mall. In the winter, the park illuminates with over 2 million lights for the Walkway of Light. “At Christmas, it’s all set up with the lights and a little Santa’s workshop,” Jenks says. “You can go in and get cookies or buy little Christmas gifts.”
