Living between local restaurants and the GM factory
While Westside’s streets are mainly residential, its location puts it right between Marion’s bigger amenities. Downtown is less than 2 miles east of the community, but residents are also situated just north of Western Avenue, which is lined with most of Marion’s local restaurants. The city’s General Motors plant is just across 2nd Street. Near one of the city’s major employers, people in Westside can live close to work and the heart of Marion.

Old-fashioned diners and local coffeeshops around Westside
In Westside, 9th Street Café is an old-fashioned diner serving everything from pancakes to meatloaf and shrimp dinners. The neighborhood itself doesn’t have a lot of other dining options. Baldwin Avenue becomes Western Avenue, where Marion residents can find local restaurants and supermarkets. The Abbey Coffee Co. feels like a converted warehouse with its high ceilings and iron and wood furniture. Next door, Jays Thai Food also offers iced tea with boba pearls along with its entrees. For groceries, there’s a Dollar General right on the other side of Baldwin Avenue for quick pickups. People can also head about a mile down Western Avenue to Aldi or 2 miles down to Walmart.

High school performing arts programs
Kids start at John W. Kendall Elementary School for kindergarten through fourth grade before continuing on to Justice Thurgood Marshall Intermediate School for fifth and sixth grades. Both schools receive C-plus ratings from Niche, while John L. McCulloch Junior High School receives a C. At B-rated Marion High School, students can enroll in the School of the Arts Partnership to move their classes online if they want to enroll in the Community School of the Arts (CSA). “It’s a longstanding school that’s an offshoot of Marion High School that’s located downtown. It’s a very prestigious school for dance and acting,” says Layla Price-Bodkin, supervisor of Marketing and Community Development with the City of Marion. “If you want to be involved in the arts, you can definitely send your kid to CSA.”

Annual Christmas traditions and the county fair
Every winter, Matter Park on the northern side of town hosts Walkway of Lights — a collection of over 2 million lights. “We kick it off every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and light the Christmas tree downtown after the parade,” Price-Bodkin says. “There’s even fireworks and live reindeer.” At the fairgrounds just east of downtown, Grant County Fair happens every mid-June, offering carnival rides, animal shows and a different band every night of the week.

While Westside doesn’t have its own neighborhood parks, there are some in its neighboring communities. Webster Park’s basketball and tennis courts are surrounded by open space and trees. Lincoln Park is to the west, offering six baseball diamonds. Stretching along the neighborhood’s north side, the Cardinal Greenway Trail attracts pedestrians, bikers and skaters. It connects to other city parks and continues for 62 miles beyond the city.
