Lamont
The communtiy comes together at neighborhood events and churches
The Lamont Civic Association is a volunteer-run organization that has served the village since 1958. “Our focus is making Lamont a nicer place to live, both in terms of safety and how the village looks,” Bronkema says. The association decorates Leonard Street with Christmas lights in the winter and cornstalks in the fall. They plan community events, including a bi-annual ice cream social at the local park, which has local music performances and lawn games. “Last year, we had line dancing; it was amazing how many people turned up to learn how to dance,” Bronkema says.Lamont Christian Reformed Church hosts dinners and youth programming like an annual art camp. “A lot of people consider that church the heart of the community,” Bronkema says. A few miles north, Lamont Community Church also offers Bible school and youth groups.Modern subdivisions surround a vintage village center
Although a few properties from the 1800s remain, many of Lamont’s homes are midcentury ranch styles from the mid-1900s. Mature trees offer a feeling of natural seclusion, and many yards span an acre or more. Prices range from $300,000 to $400,000. Starting in the early 2000s, modern development began moving in. Subdivisions of New Traditional homes sit on wide lawns of close-cropped grass, offering amenities like basement movie theaters and backyard pools. Prices for these newer, high-end homes range from $500,000 to $700,000. All homes in Lamont use well water and private septic systems. The banks of the Grand River and area creeks are at a slight risk of flooding, but most residential properties are unaffected.Learn at the local Christian school or nearby public options
The village is home to Lamont Christian School, which serves preschool to eighth grade. The school is independently run and offers local bus services. “Lamont Christian almost feels like an old country schoolhouse,” Bronkema says. “It’s right next to a large farm, and the kids volunteer to clean up our park every year. You don’t need to live in the village to attend the school, but it still draws a lot of people to this area.”Public school students head 5 miles north to Coopersville, where all school buildings share a central campus. Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten kids can attend the Early Childhood Center, which receives a B-minus grade from Niche. Then it’s on to East Elementary for first through second grade and South Elementary for third through fifth grade. Both elementary schools receive a B grade. Older kids move on to Coopersville Middle, rated B-plus and Coopersville High, rated B.Kids can walk over to play at the community park
Lamont Community Park is the site of summer playdates and neighborhood gatherings. “The park stays busy with children playing,” Bronkema says. “Parents will watch their younger kids play in the sandbox while sitting in the shade of the pavilion.” The sports courts, picnic pavilion and play areas have all been added by the Lamont Civic Association, who repurposed the space after the village’s old schoolhouse closed down. The school’s bricks, engraved by former students and village residents, now form a monument honoring Lamont’s history. The park is walkable for most people within the village center. To join in on the fun, kids from the nearby Lamont Woods subdivision have created a walking path leading through the forest to get to the park. Although some homes in Lamont have views of the Grand River, public access to the waterway is a couple of miles away. “If people want a boat launch, they typically go across the river to the Eastmanville Bayou,” Bronkema says.Drive to Coopersville for shopping and dining
There are no retail options in the village of Lamont, so residents must hop in the car to reach shopping and dining options. For typical errand runs, Coopersville, 5 miles north, is the closest choice. The small city has a Family Fare Supermarket and several restaurants, including a locally run brewery. A little closer to Lamont, Green Vale Farm has meats and cheeses sourced fresh from their farm.Lamont is close to both Grand Rapids and Lake Michigan
Lamont is a car-dependent area, about 18 miles, or 20 minutes, from the heart of Grand Rapids. The large city has the closest major hospital and the Gerald R. Ford International Airport. Just 6 miles south, Grand Valley State University is a major employer of the region. For summer excursions, the lakeside cities of Holland and Grand Haven are only 25 miles west. “It’s hard to find a place that is this close to Grand Rapids and Lake Michigan but doesn’t have all that city activity,” Bronkema says. “That’s what makes Lamont unique.”
