Small town vibes near a bustling downtown
Lawndale isn't far from Downtown Massillon -- just over the Tuscarawas River, in fact -- but residents and business owners say the connections and community pride found in the neighborhood west of the city center can at times feel more like that of its own small town. “It’s a very tight-knit community,” says Aaron Robey, a real estate agent with Keller Williams Legacy Group Realty.
Neighborhood restaurants are some of those places deliver that Main Street USA feel. “A lot of the regular customer base are neighbors, even employees live right down the street and walk to work,'' says Aaron Taylor, a co-owner of the husband-wife run Jay's Pizza, on 15th Street Southwest -- in the heart of the residential section.
School spirit plays into it as well, with an annual parade marking a traditional high school football rivalry game that dates back to the 19th century. And although the neighborhood is mostly residential, with some sidewalks, Lawndale’s proximity to Downtown Massillon gives residents access to theaters and libraries that display stunning gothic facades and offer a glimpse into the city’s history.
Colorful bungalows and ranch-style homes
Lawndale has a suburban, just-outside-the-city feel with homes close together on small lots. Bungalows displaying a mix of shingle siding and brick facades line the streets. Also commonly seen are Craftsman and ranch-style homes with colorful facades and central dormer windows. Some residences have driveways and attached garages, but street parking is available for homes without. Roads are in decent shape, and narrow sidewalks lead through most of the residential areas. Home prices in Lawndale typically range from $130,000 to $200,000, but homes needing renovations or repairs can sell for $80,000 to $100,000.
