An established community with a know-your-neighbor feel
West of the Tuscarawas River, Mayflower Village is a small community, its roads shaded by maples and lined with older homes, giving it a classic American-suburb vibe with a bit of a historic feel. Samantha Hopper, a Massillon native and Realtor with Keller Williams Commercial Legacy Group, says that combination has staying power for many of the neighborhood's residents. “People don’t come and go often around there; they tend to stick around,” she says. With grocery stores, service shops and a small park right within the neighborhood, locals can easily fulfill their daily needs while having access to the city just across the river. “It’s super convenient if you don’t drive,” says Hopper. “You’ve got the Mayflower shopping center within walking distance. Anything you might need is right in that little shopping plaza right on Lincoln Way.” While walkability and convenience are part of the draw, Hopper explains that the friendly, know-your-neighbor-vibe is real and it's a selling point. “A lot of people like the close-neighbor aspect of it. Kids are always out playing, and the trick or treats are always so cool in Mayflower; it’s the type of place where people really go all out with the decorations.”

Mid-century homes line the narrow roads
Residential roads are largely connected by north-south main streets, linking a large portion of the neighborhood. Expect narrow roads and sidewalks with wired streetlamps. “That little neighborhood has been around for quite some time,” says Hopper. “Most of the houses were built in the 1950s or so— not much new construction back in Mayflower.” Most homes are ranch-styles, with a few Colonial Revivals sprinkled throughout. Small bungalows and mobile homes can also be found here. The average single-family home size is about 1,200 square feet, with two to three bedrooms on lots averaging just under a quarter-acre. Detached garages and front porches are common. Prices range from $100,000 to $200,000, making it more affordable than newer, adjacent neighborhoods such as West Brookfield, where the median sale price is $200,000.

Well-known parks and lesser-known lakes
Lincoln Park, which borders the neighborhood to the east, has a playground, a disc golf course, picnic tables and a walking trail. Considered a hidden gem by locals, Earl Lake Park, approximately 2 miles to the north, is a nature retreat with a lake full of bass, carp and catfish. “It’s kind of like a little best-kept secret,” says Hopper. “You can go there for the day and fish and swim. People rent it out for graduation parties and stuff like that, too.” The park also has a pool. More ambitious anglers can explore West Sippo Creek for larger catches. The Sippo Valley Trail is a popular route for cycling, walking, horseback riding and bird watching. “If you take the walking path, you can go all over town on your bicycle, starting right from home,” says Hopper. For fun indoors, the Massillon Parks & Recreation Center has sports courts and an aquatic center with a two-lane lap pool, a multi-purpose pool, a lazy river, a kiddie play area and two curling water slides.

The Mayflower Neighborhood Shopping Center
Though Mayflower Village is mostly residential, there are some shops and restaurants dotting the neighborhood’s bordering streets. A little off the beaten path, Bison Street Burgers & Brews serves American classics in a log cabin. Kraus Pizza is a small local franchise with a loyal following. “People go nuts over it,” says Hopper. “It's huge in Massillon. People who grow up here then move away—when they visit, they’ll get half-baked Kraus pies and take them with them in coolers back to their families out of town.” The Mayflower Neighborhood Shopping Center has Buehler's Fresh Food, where locals buy fresh produce and groceries. The plaza also has Dollar General, a barber shop and a few local restaurants. About 3 miles to the south, Massillon Marketplace has chain department stores and restaurants like Lowe’s, Walmart, Marshalls, Applebee’s and IHOP.

Downtown festivals
Massillon’s city center hosts a variety of community festivals every year, including the Massillon Fun Fest, held annually as part of the summer celebration. “People go all out for this festival,” says Cindy Rudy, who’s worked at the Massillon Public Library for 13 years. “Local businesses set up booths to provide games and food; there are bounce houses, face painting, dancing shows and a petting zoo.” Residents also support the city’s high school football team, the Massillon Tigers. “People get very involved for homecoming; they have huge rallies, tailgating parties, booster clubs… it’s just over-the-top excitement,” Rudy says. Community members come together in the winter for the Holiday Parade and Light Up festivities. The city also hosts The Cruise-In & Dance Party, an annual car show that attracts thousands of visitors.
