A residential enclave west of the Tuscarawas

Along the west bank of the Tuscarawas River is West Park-Columbia, a small residential community a bridge away from Massillon’s bustling city center. Once an area where the city's factory workers settled, West Park-Columbia has evolved into a neighborhood connected to parks, shops and schools. This established community is known for its strong support of local businesses, community events and, in season, high school football. “It’s not a great big town,” says Cindy Rudy, Circulation Manager with the Massillon Public Library. “But it’s very community-oriented.”

Vintage bungalows along the riverbank

Laid out in a grid, West Park’s streets pass compact lots dotted with oaks and red maples. Though some homes have driveways, most residents park on the street, as many homes are older and don’t come with attached garages. Buying opportunities in West Park-Columbia can be very limited, and properties sell within 10 days. Home styles include everything from 1920s bungalows and older Four Squares to new traditional homes. Houses needing updates or repairs range in price from $40,000 to $80,000. More updated homes go for $90,000 to $200,000 on average.

Dinner in West Park and shopping downtown

Tremont Pub, housed in a red brick building north of West Park, has a hometown bar vibe mixed with a classic saloon feel. Top of the Viaduct, the local diner that “has been here forever,” says Rudy, is right by the neighborhood for hearty breakfasts and diner classics. Emmert's Market and Buehler's Fresh Food are the closest grocery stores. Massillon Marketplace has retail centers such as Walmart and Lowe’s for household essentials. Additional shops, such as Walgreen's Pharmacy and Save A Lot, are located at the Towne Plaza Shopping Center.

Local Events and Massillon football pride

“People here are nuts about football,'' says Rudy. "They throw huge rallies, parades and tailgating parties to support Washington High’s football team, the Massillon Tigers. The city also does many things free of charge for residents.” Festivals include Fun Fest and Massillon Museum Island Party. Residents come to the city center for both events and enjoy the food trucks, games and activities for the children and live music.
