Living in Lockport Heights
Situated between marshlands and the slow-flowing Bayou Lafourche is the small, unincorporated community of Lockport Heights. Most of the northern section consists of farmlands and homes branching off Highway 1. The southern end has local storefronts and more houses. Melinda Punch, the owner of Punch's Seafood Market, says this is a "quiet and close-knit community" supporting its local businesses. "We've been at the same location for 30 years. There are a lot of small local businesses in this area." A canal separates the community from the Town of Lockport.
The market has a mix of older and newer homes
In Lockport Heights, homes to the north are more spaced out than properties to the south. New Traditional houses are in this part of the community, inside the Lake View Plantation development. A handful of new constructions are alongside older ranch-styles that have stood for decades. Manufactured homes are raised on elevated blocks to prevent flood damage, while some front yards have ditches for rainwater drainage. Homes don't often enter the market in Lockport Heights, but the most recent dwelling range in price from about $125,000 to around $275,000. There are also plots of undeveloped land available for purchase.
Shopping and Dining on Highway 1
Highway 1 acts as Lockport Heights' main business route. Central Sno is a walk-up window stand serving frozen desserts, nachos and hot dogs. Punch's Seafood Market is the only food store in the neighborhood. "We have fresh seafood and frozen products that we make right here," Punch says. "The stuffed crabs, stuffed shrimp and crawfish patties are popular." Locals can also shop at Rouses Market and Walmart Supercenter, about 3 miles away.
Attending schools in and around Lockport
Young children attend Lockport Lower Elementary and move on to Lockport Upper Elementary; the schools earn B-plus and A-minus grades, respectively, from Niche. Lockport Middle receives a B-plus, and Central Lafourche High has a B. High school seniors and their families participate in the Senior Class Parade in May. Residents line up for a car procession that winds through the streets of nearby Lockport to celebrate upcoming graduations.
Fun at Lockport Community Center
Lockport Community Center opened in 2020 and became popular for community events and private gatherings. The center also offers a full gym for volleyball and basketball. Bayou Side Park, just a mile away in Lockport, has playgrounds and a gazebo overlooking the water. Recent updates to the park include wharf repairs, new pavilions and additional lighting.
Getting around the area on Highway 1
The main thoroughfare, Highway 1, brings locals to U.S. Highway 90 before reaching central Raceland in about 5 miles. The Crescent Avenue Lift Bridge connects the community to the Town of Lockport.
Flooding and environment trends
Half of the community, particularly the western side, sits within a Special Flood Hazard Area. Beau Toups, a Realtor with Century 21 Action Realty, who lives in the parish, says that although the community is considered at risk of flooding, that could change. "Lafourche Parish is currently updating flood maps, so it may come out for the best," Toups says. As with much of Southern Louisiana, the community is at risk of hurricanes and tropical storms, which can result in wind damage and flooding. The parish also has a history of marsh fires.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
