Colonial homes branching off from the course of the river
Multi-family dwellings can be found along the banks of the Assabet River and around Main Street, generally pricing from $240,000 to $350,000. “Immediately downtown, there are some condos and apartments,” Tetreault says. “But a lot of the housing was built to accommodate the mill workers, so a good portion of the homes are antique village colonials that are within walking distance of Main Street.” These homes on side streets branching off from the main thoroughfare were most often built before 1920, with a few newer constructions sprinkled throughout. Cape Cod and cottage styles are most prominent, generally costing between $400,000 and $700,000. Homes closer to the banks of the Assabet River can reach price points above $820,000, although they are situated in the river’s flood zone.Green space and Little League surrounding the Assabet River
As a mill town, Maynard’s history is intimately tied to the Assabet River, a natural preservation area that helps to set the town apart. “Maynard is unique in that it has a lot of conserved land for people to get out and about,” says Tetreault. “The Assabet River Wildlife Refuge is connected to the village, and the Assabet River Rail Trail goes straight to the refuge from downtown. The rail trail runs along the river, so it’s a popular place to hike. All the green space gives the town a micro-urban setting.” There is a small basketball court at Coolidge Park Playground on Parker Street, along with a playground where children can climb the rope jungle gym or swing from the monkey bars. The baseball diamonds at Coolidge Park, DJ’s Field and Fowler Middle School serve as the home locations for Maynard Stow Baseball and Softball, the local Little League organization.Three public schools serve the town of Maynard
Maynard is served by the Maynard Public School system, which earns an overall B-minus from Niche and educates over 1,200 students. There are just three schools comprising the district, so all children enrolled in public schools will begin at Green Meadow School, which earns a C-plus. Fowler Middle scores a B-minus. Maynard High School scores a B and has a strong boys’ varsity basketball squad. The team made the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Final Four in 2024. Imago School, a private faith-based alternative for students from kindergarten through grade 8, is located immediately downtown. The Maynard Cultural Committee encourages expression and hosts events
As a community, Maynard takes steps to recognize and promote cultural assets throughout the town. These include the Maynard Fine Arts Theatre, a restored three-screen movie house that showcases everything from summer blockbusters to independent and international features. ArtSpace Maynard hosts workshops and exhibits of local artists' work. The Maynard Cultural Committee has also either created or sponsored several events that take place in the city throughout the year, including a bocce tournament, the Maynard Jazz Festival and Music on Main, which brings several live bands to the downtown district between July and August.
Commuting to Boston by rail and by highway
Downtown Maynard is just 25 miles west of Boston via the Concord Turnpike; however, during rush hour, this commute can often last over an hour. Those who wish to avoid the traffic jams have public transportation options. “The closest train station is in South Acton,” Tetreault says. “The rail trail actually connects to it, so you can bike there when the weather is nice and catch the commuter rail into Boston.” At the South Acton Station, folks can catch the Fitchburg Line train and be at North Station in the city in just under 55 minutes.
Diverse and creative cuisine is easy to come by on Main Street
Maynard’s Main Street is lined with restaurants and small businesses representing a variety of offerings. Patrons dine beneath patio heaters outside the front of Azucar Tapas Bar or at the picnic tables behind Amory’s Tomb Brewing Company, while others crowd into Smack Noodle for a bowl of ramen. The Pleasant Café, owned and operated by the same family since 1945, serves contemporary twists on standard diner classics, such as steak and cheese egg rolls and short rib grilled cheese sandwiches. Residents can pick up fresh produce at Assabet Co-op Market, and the Market Basket on Digital Way is the nearest supermarket. The Target in Marlborough, located almost 9 miles south, is the closest big-box retailer.
