The central hub of the Village of Eternal Light
Maywood’s commuters and parkgoers convene where Lake Street meets the Des Plaines River. Though it may qualify as this village’s downtown, the area is 40% industrial and manufacturing facilities, and locals drive by trucks waiting to load. The true nature of this village is in the details, from the Fred Hampton statue outside his namesake aquatic center to the unassuming monument right behind the McDonald’s on Main Street, honoring the Ten Mile Freedom House, a stop on the Underground Railroad. Maywood maintains strong Hispanic and African American populations who are celebrated through its local institutions and traditions. Though it may not have the walkability or commercial core of other Chicagoland city centers, Downtown Maywood provides an access point to downtown Chicago and opportunities for community building.
Taking the Metra or Pace bus to O’Hare, Chicago
Whistles sound as Metra trains pull past Main Street, stopping at Maywood Station to pick up commuters on the Union Pacific West Line. Barring delays, these run every 90 minutes to Ogilvie Transportation Center in downtown Chicago, about a 30-minute trip. Pace suburban buses also arrive at the Lake Street stop and travel to the Green Line trains in Oak Park, and to Cumberland Blue Line Station, which heads straight into the Chicago O’Hare International Airport terminal. Drivers are 8 miles from the airport and about 12 miles from the heart of the Windy City via Interstate 290. Loyola University Medical Center sits across the way from Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital—the largest VA in the state of Illinois—both about 2 miles south of downtown.
Centrally located Maywood Park
Vast Maywood Park makes up the eastern portion of downtown, with a basketball court, baseball diamond and walking trails to picnic pavilions. The Fred Hampton Family Aquatics Center is located in the park, named for the integral Black Panther Party member who campaigned for the recreation center in his hometown. The main branch of the Maywood Public Library also sits just shy of the park. To the east are forest preserves lining the Des Plaines River with marked and unmarked trails. Thatcher Woods includes an outdoor event pavilion and the Trailside Museum of Natural History, which offers guided hikes and tours of its stately Victorian mansion.
Downtown Maywood has a number of playgrounds like the one in West Maywood Park.
Maywood Public Library District is open to the public.

Gearing up for Maywood Fest
About 5,000 visitors flood the booths, main stage, food trucks and kid’s activity booths at Maywood Park each day of Maywood Fest in the fall, making it the village’s largest annual event. The public library hosts Maywood Summer Market from June to September in partnership with Real Foods Collective, which purchases and promotes goods from Black, Brown, Latino and women farmers. The WestTown Museum of Cultural History hosts field trips for local kids, provides job and computer training and houses a collection chronologizing Maywood’s history.
In the summer, residents love attending the Forest Park German Fest.
The balloon artists are very talented at Winston Plaza's Kid-a-Palooza.

Folk-style homes and bungalows walkable from Maywood’s central sector
Many folks living shy of the Metra and park also live across the street from an auto body shop or distribution center. Sparse foliage provides limited sidewalk shade out front of homes first built in the early 1900s, which include National Folk, colonial-style, American Foursquares. Brick multiplexes with studio units are also available, though they rarely go on sale; one sold in 2024 for $55,000. Some homes need more renovations before move-in while others were recently remodeled. Options range from $105,000 to $350,000, including limited vacant lots. Front porches or small porticos are lined with flowerpots and trinkets, and it’s common to see a trampoline or playset from the front yard. Back patio exits lead to concrete alleyways for parking, sheds and trash cans traced by power lines overhead.

Grocery and food options close to downtown Maywood
Save for the local Walgreens, shopping options are limited along Main Street. Carnicerias Jimenez imports Mexican groceries from their location about a mile west, while options like Jewel-Osco and Trader Joe’s are location to the east headed towards downtown Oak Park. However, several options for homestyle takeout are down the street. Carnitas Don Alfredo Maywood serves quick Mexican fare to folks pulling into the attached gas station and on their lunch break, while Maywood Express packs to-go orders of hot dogs and gyros from their cottage-like haunt.
Carnitas Don Alfredo serves some of the best Mexican fare in the area, north of East Village.
Find fresh fruits and vegetables at Carniceria Jiminez.
