Maywood's eastern suburb in transition in East Village
East Village is part of a community in transition. Situated at the southeast corner of Maywood, East Village’s residential streets are working on both attracting new community members and maintaining its existing population. “There’s new life happening in Maywood,” says real estate agent Jose Leon with RE/MAX Partners. “Ten years ago, there were a lot of vacant, abandoned buildings that have been bought up now.” Meanwhile, the Village government offers beautification and maintenance programs to support Maywood’s residents and properties.
East Village has sidewalks throughout the neighborhood.

Historic Nationals and American Foursquares across East Village
Stretching along East Village’s numbered avenues, historic National-style homes built at the turn of the century sit alongside American Foursquares and workers’ cottages dating back to the 1920s and '30s. Trees shade the sidewalks, planted at regular intervals between the walkways and the curb. As more people have invested in the community, prices are on the rise. “It’s not that cheap anymore,” Leon says. “Right across the way in the next suburb over, you were buying the same house for $200,000 and in Maywood, you were buying it for $40,000. Now, it’s on par with the surrounding communities.” East Village homes now typically sell for between $100,000 and $375,000. Additionally, Maywood’s village government is trying to encourage current residents to repair and maintain their properties. Homeowners who have lived in Maywood as their primary residence for at least seven years are eligible for cash assistance. Per its home improvement program, the village program matches up to $5,000 spent on home management and repairs, covering exterior projects, like fencing and roofing, and interior ones, like plumbing and insulation.
American Foursquares are popular in East Village.

Busing around Maywood from East Village
Fifth Avenue bisects East Village, connecting it with Interstate 290 to the south and the Maywood Metra station, about 1 mile to the north. Commuters can choose either option when heading into downtown Chicago, about 11 miles away. Because the Interstate is so close, residents may hear traffic from their homes, especially on the southern side of the neighborhood. Buses stop along Madison Street and 5th Avenue, linking residents to amenities like the parks and libraries or the various eateries around Maywood. Off IL-171, Loyola University Medical Center is about 1.5 miles away and shares its grounds with the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, for veterans and their families. Those traveling beyond Maywood can choose either Chicago O’Hare International Airport—15 miles north—or Chicago Midway International Airport—10 miles south.

Library programs and activities or jogs down paved pathways
While East Village doesn’t have any neighborhood parks of its own, the Illinois Prairie Path runs down the center of the neighborhood and beyond, stretching 61 miles through Chicagoland. East Village residents can hop on the trail for a morning jog, dog walk or a bike ride. Residents can cross Madison Street to play on the playground at Maywood Park District. Impact Church also meets at the recreation’s center gym. Up along Main Street, Maywood Park’s baseball diamonds and basketball courts share the grounds with the Maywood Public Library District, where adults and kids can stop in for programs on learning how to use technology, meditation and Bingo.
Veterans Memorial Maywood Park has a big playground for the kids.

New brunch destinations and longstanding fast-food restaurants
Most of Maywood’s dining scene is fast-food restaurants, but not necessarily national chains. At Al’s Drive-In, visitors order inside and take their food out to their cars or the few picnic tables to eat. It serves a mix of American and Chinese favorites, with menu items covering everything from burgers and egg rolls to Italian beef sandwiches and stir fry. At the center of East Village, Pumpkin’s Place is also all carry out, offering soul food and wings. Originally opening its Maywood location back in 2022, Mr. Stacks is one of Maywood’s newer businesses bringing more activity to the area. Here, residents can stop in for stacks of pancakes and other breakfast favorites. For imported goods, residents can walk to Kingston Market Caribbean and African Groceries off 5th Avenue. Whole Foods, Jewel-Osco and Trader Joe’s are also about 2.5 miles away.
Al’s Drive-In has been serving East Village residents since 1955.

Growing Maywood pride through festivals and annual cleanups
For Maywood Fest, people across the village gather in Maywood Park to ride carnival rides or explore the local vendor market. People sit on the lawn to watch local musicians perform on the stages erected for the September festival. As the village focuses more on beautification, annual traditions like Village Pride, Village Wide in May invite volunteers to participate in cleanup projects, like picking up litter, uncluttering front yards, removing graffiti and mulching playgrounds.
