Short commutes to Maywood attractions and downtown Chicago
Seminary District is situated along Interstate 290, making it a commuter-friendly neighborhood supported by surrounding parks and events in nearby areas. Primarily residential, densely placed early- to mid-20th-century homes fill rectangular blocks synonymous with Chicago's western sprawl. Locally owned restaurants are nearby on Roosevelt Road, and retail shopping is along West North Avenue. Short trips lead to the fishing pond and recreation center at Stevenson Park as well as the Village of Maywood's downtown area, 2 miles northeast, where residents convene for events. "It's a very up-and-coming neighborhood, and it's close to the interstate and shopping," says Jorge Vigil, a Broker with HomeSmart.
20th-century home designs in the Seminary District
Rows of oak trees stand on wide, sidewalk-lined residential streets that connect the neighborhood. One-car driveways share quarter-acre lots with houses built throughout the early- to mid-1900s. These homes sit at the end of narrow front walkways and are mostly brick-clad bungalows and ranch-style. According to O'Neia Washington, a Realtor with O W Auction Group, home values in the area are appreciating, and many properties have undergone remodeling. Prices typically range from $120,000 to $385,000, depending on the size and condition. A handful of townhomes are also available and range in price from $115,000 to $170,000.

Shopping along West North Avenue
In the neighborhood, residents can pick up comfort food from locally owned Just Like Mama's and get wings and fried catfish to-go from JJ Fish & Chicken. An array of eateries also line Roosevelt Road, a half mile south. Washington mentions that many new businesses are popping up along the corridor. "They just built a Starbucks on the corner of 1st Avenue," she says. For groceries, Carnicerias Jimenez sells Hispanic goods a mile north, and Jewel-Osco is a 3-mile trip northeast, off West North Avenue. The latter sits next to Target alongside Winston Plaza, which includes retailers like Ross Dress for Less, Dollar Tree and several others.

Seasonal events in downtown Maywood
"Some blocks have activities and events, and others are pretty quiet," Vigil says. Maywood hosts its annual Maywood Fest in early September to close out the summer season. The celebration encourages locals to stop by Maywood Park for a weekend of live music and food and to peruse vendors selling art and other handmade goods. In December, folks gather for the Tree Lighting Celebration at Maywood City Hall. The event includes performances from local student choirs and marching bands, visits with Santa and the tree lighting to ring in the holiday.
Seminary District residents love attending the yearly Kid-a-Palooza in nearby Melrose Park.
