Enduring homes, neighboring parks and shopping nearby
South Maywood, a western suburb of Chicago, is positioned between the area’s main expressway and an established strip of shopping and dining establishments. Its homes, some dating back more than 100 years, present a variety of architectural styles and share space with pocket parks where little ones run loose. Similarly, Miller Meadow next door is where residents can host gatherings or spot wildlife along its walking trail. Roosevelt Road, spanning the community's southern boundary, offers a blend of chain restaurants, local eateries and boutiques. Alongside bus stops that line the avenue, residents have immediate access to Interstate 290 to the north, making this a commuter-friendly community.
Roosevelt Road's local establishments
Roosevelt Roadis a half-mile walk south of the community’s northernmost homes. “It’s a thriving corridor,” Washington says. “A lot of small businesses are popping up throughout there.” Along the avenue, residents can pick up new and used vinyl from We Buy Records, peruse the New To You Upscale Resale Store racks or get customized clothing from Hildebrand Sporting Goods. A series of chain restaurants share the corridor with local eateries like Broadview Family Restaurant, a laid-back diner that serves traditional American-style breakfast. A few doors down, The View offers an upscale experience where patrons can book private event spaces and enjoy weekly live entertainment. Broadview Village Square, a mile south, is home to big-box retailers like Target and Marshall’s and is 2 blocks west of an Aldi for groceries.

Workers' cottages and Georgian-style homes
South Maywood comprises grid-like residential streets synonymous with communities close to downtown Chicago. Along each are narrow sidewalks, streetlights and the high-reaching oak and pine tree canopies. Houses built throughout the 20th century sit atop lots less than a quarter-acre and at the foot of concrete pathways connecting each to the street. Workers’ cottages and brick-clad Georgian-style homes make up the bulk of the community’s stock, with commonalities seen in window and front porch awnings and detached backyard garages. “The home values there are appreciating, and a lot of remodeling has been done in the area,” says O’Neia Washington, a Realtor with O W Auction Group Llc and resident of the nearby Hinsdale community. Selling prices typically range from $85,000 for a home needing repair to $430,000 for a larger, recently renovated property.

Miller Meadow's Des Plaines River views
A handful of pocket parks within the neighborhood feature traditional playgrounds for quick afternoon visits. Meanwhile, Schroeder Park sits 4 blocks south of the community. In summer, little ones splash about in the outdoor pool and splash pad, both of which reopened in the 2024 season after repairs. Alongside offering swimming lessons and water aerobics, the park includes a pair of basketball courts and a large playground. The trail at Miller Meadows, a nature preserve directly southeast, provides a glimpse of the Des Plaines River. It’s common for those strolling along the paved pathway to pass by pups running loose in the off-leash dog park or the canopy tents and lawn chairs of birthday celebrations and other gatherings.

Commuting along Interstate 290
“It’s in a central location and minutes from the city,” Washington says. Interstate 290 runs along the community’s northern side, connecting commuters to downtown Chicago 12 miles east. The throughway also leads travelers to flights at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, 15 miles north, with the help of Interstate 294. Chicago Midway International Airport is also within a 15-mile trip to the southeast. Edward Hines Junior Hospital is on the other side of Roosevelt Road, alongside several other medical facilities and Loyola University Chicago’s Health Science Campus. Public transportation opportunities include Metra’s red line at Maywood Train Station, 2 miles north, and Suburban Pace Bus stops that line Roosevelt Road.
Proviso East High School's summer programming
Both Bellwood School District No. 88 and Maywood-Melrose Park-Broadview School District No. 89 serve the community. However, the majority of students are enrolled in the latter. Young students can attend Roosevelt Elementary School and Irving Middle School, both of which maintain a C-rating on Niche. Older students can head to Proviso East High School, which holds a C-minus rating. The district offers several multilingual summer programs, including Camp Power Up, JumpStart and several others. Walther Cristian Academy, 2 miles north, is the nearest private institution and maintains an A-minus rating.

Juneteenth Celebrations at Schroeder Park
The Village of Broadway throws its annual Juneteenth celebrations over the weekend prior to the holiday. Crowds gather at Shroeder Park to watch performances from an array of musicians, a fireworks show and the raising of the Juneteenth flag. Maywood Fest occurs a few months later, in early September, at Maywood Veterans Park. The three-day celebration hosts live music across several genres, food from local vendors and the annual Car and Bike show.

The sounds of passing cars and overhead planes
Considering its proximity to I-290, those living on the north side are susceptible to the sounds of passing cars. Meanwhile, those in the southeast can expect occasional sirens from emergency vehicles heading in and out of the nearby medical facilities. The entire community, however, does experience occasional overhead noise from planes coming in and out of Chicago O’Hare International Airport, according to the Department of Transportation's National Transportation Map.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
