Convenience & community pride in the West Village
The West Village community sits between Maywood and Melrose Park, an urban residential enclave lined with historic homes, pocket parks, transit stops and houses of worship. Largely residential and arranged in a typical urban grid, the community is also near surrounding walkable villages packed with modern shops and eateries. Maywood’s strong sense of community is reflected in its annual events, primarily oriented around beautification and unity. The Maywood Peace Garden on 17th Avenue is often the subject of these beautification efforts maintained by West Village residents throughout the year. From ample public transit options to historic homes and walkable amenities, Maywood’s West Village represents much of what the western suburbs offer: Convenience and a sense of community pride.
Chicago-style bungalows nod to Maywood’s history
Chicago-style bungalows line the residential streets of West Village. Primarily constructed between the 1920s and 60s, these traditional homes denote the area’s history. Old-growth trees shade the sidewalks out front, many dating back to the 19th century when Maywood was first established. Street parking is common, but detached garages come standard. Residents access their garages via single-lane alleyways woven between streets in place of driveways. Homebuyers can expect modest, square lawns and front stoops with railings, often decorated with shrubs and gardens. Altogether, prices range between $100,000 and $430,000, below average for the Chicago Metropolitan Area.

Residential streets often house places of worship
The West Village community is home to five unique houses of worship, each within walking distance of many homes. Neighborhood United Methodist, Christian Unity Baptist Church and Christ Temple Church comprise only a handful of Maywood's nearly 30 spiritual institutions spread throughout the village. Just outside the neighborhood, St. Gregorios Malankara Orthodox Cathedral honors the traditions and practices of the East Asian Church. A parish in the diocese of Southwest America of the Malankara Orthodox Church of India, St. Gregorios reflects Maywood's diverse spiritual community.

Navigating Chicago’s western suburbs
Public transit is a popular mode of transportation for West Village residents. Lake Street, St. Charles Road and South 19th Avenue offer several Pace Suburban bus stops, taking riders to the nearby hubs of Melrose Park, Forest Park and Bellwood. The nearest emergency room, Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital, shares a campus with Loyola University Medical Center about 2 miles south in Broadview.
Residents of West Village are also well-positioned to reach the Melrose Park Metra station, located on Main Street just a few blocks from most homes. Chicago commuters may also head to the Maywood or River Forest Stations farther east for a shorter train ride into the city. L train devotees will find the nearest stops at the Green Line’s Harlem/Lake and the Blue Line’s Forest Park. Both routes take riders 30 minutes east to The Loop. Alternatively, drivers can expect a 12-mile commute on Interstate 290. Out-of-state travelers heading to Chicago O’Hare International Airport can similarly make the 9-mile commute by car, bus, Metra or L train.

Nearby Melrose Park is packed with shops & eateries
West Village borders Melrose Park to the south, meaning residents are often within walking distance of Broadway Avenue. This bustling strip is lined with Latino shops and eateries, marking the entrance to Maywood’s northern neighbor. On the corner, Las Gordita De Don Angel is a cash-only Mexican eatery known for its traditional grab-and-go gorditas. Super Mercado Torres sits up the street, offering local and imported products from fresh-cut deli items to La Chona Queso Fresco. North Avenue features various retailers and big-box stops, including Target, Jewel-Osco, Best Buy and Aldi. Casual eats like Wingstop and Chipotle fill in the gaps, all within 2 miles of West Village. Residents may also head east into Forest Park for Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods on Harlem Avenue. Surrounding retailers like Old Navy and Sephora sit on walkable strips like Westgate and Lake Street, lined with locally-owned restaurants and gift shops.

Thatcher Woods is a natural oasis in the concrete suburbs
Pocket parks make up the majority of green spaces in Maywood. In turn, residents of West Village are within walking distance of Donald P. Lemm Park and West Maywood Park, each offering a gated playground with benches for onlooking guardians. Heading west on Washington Boulevard, Stevenson Park offers a broader range of amenities, including ball fields, courts and walking paths. Those seeking more immersive outdoor recreation will typically head to Thatcher Woods, 2 miles east. The 245-acre woodland preserve surrounds the Des Plaines River, providing unpaved trails for hikers and particularly adventurous cyclists. Additionally, visitors can stop by the Trailside Museum of Natural History to peruse wildflower gardens and live animal exhibits.

Maywood’s annual events reflect a strong community spirit
Each Spring, Maywood hosts its annual Village Pride, Village Wide beautification and clean-up event. Homeowners, church members and village officials come together for one afternoon to manicure sidewalks, streets, storefronts and places of worship. Part of the initiative includes maintaining the Maywood Peace Garden, located at the intersection of 17th Avenue and Madison Street. Flowers, stepping stones and painted sculptures help curate this quiet space, intended to bring solace to its visitors. In September, residents celebrate unity at the annual Maywood Fest. Spanning a weekend in September, the festival features live music, local vendors, inflatables and a community picnic held at Maywood Park on Oak Street.
