Are you looking for a small-town lifestyle where you know everyone’s name? You may find it in McDonald, a borough with a close-knit community. “It's a great small town. Everyone supports and helps out at events,” says Nikki Sarchet, Director at the Heritage Public Library.

Southwest of Pittsburgh, the suburb is made up of a little downtown area on South McDonald Street and surrounding blocks of single-family homes on medium-sized yards. Prospective buyers can choose from styles like bungalows, American Foursquares, homes featuring gambrel roofs and ranch-style homes with small front porches. Depending on the size and conditions of the home, sales prices can range from $136,000 to $271,000.

Students in McDonald go to the Fort Cherry School District. According to Niche, the school district receives solid ratings in academics and college prep. Schools include Fort Cherry Elementary Center and Fort Cherry Junior/Senior High School. The district offers technologically advanced programs like virtual game design and accelerated computer programming.

To spend quality time with neighbors, head to the borough’s annual celebrations held in Heritage Park. The annual McSummerfest brings the town to life with a week’s worth of fun activities: rides, fireworks, a parade and live music. The Fall festival offers arts and crafts vendors, plus Native American food, since the event is sponsored by Red Eagle Village and the Native American Indian Cultural Society. The park also has its annual 4th of July fireworks to end the holiday with a bang.

For more community events, go to the Heritage Public Library. “In the fall, we have our holiday craft market, an indoor vendor show. 400 people attended last year,” Sarchet says. At the market, crafters sell their wares, while people can grab a snack from food trucks. The library also has a lunch with the easter bunny event. “We had crafts, games and an egg hunt,” Sarchet says. In June, the library plans a summer kick-off party with a large car show, a carnival with tents and large food truck selection.

For outdoor recreation, visit a few of McDonald’s parks. Multi-purpose Heritage Park has tennis courts, ballfields for the McDonald Youth Baseball/Softball League and a field for the Fort Cherry Little Rangers Youth Football League. The park also has a playground, a small skatepark and a picnic pavilion. The large outdoor space often hosts community gatherings. The smaller East End Park offers a swing set and ballfields for the youth league. At the Panhandle Trail, bike or walk in the woodlands for a slice of Western Pennsylvania nature.

To grab a convenient bite to eat, the community has a few local options. Helicon Brewing McDonald is an IPA microbrewery complete with pinball, pool tables and more games for hangouts with friends. At Hart's Restaurant & Lounge, have family lunches of American fare in a simple hole in the wall restaurant. Pizza Capri offers a unique spin on a pizza place by serving hearty breakfasts in the no-frills interior, making it ideal for weekend brunches.

About 18 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, residents of McDonald can easily commute to the big city. For Pittsburgh adventures, visit Point State Park for scenic river vistas or Acrisure Stadium for a Steelers game. In McDonald, enjoy a small-town suburb with an array of community parks and events.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
