Established in 1788, with the promise of fertile soil, a gentle land elevation and nourishment from nearby creeks, Mount Pleasant Township of Washington County transformed a densely forested landscape into an agricultural and farming hub 25 miles from Pittsburgh.

The landscape of Mount Pleasant Township is characterized by several farms, including Kraeer Farms, now in its seventh generation, supplying high-quality straw and hay that serves the local equestrian community. It's the kind of place where farm life runs in the blood. "I opened the shop in 2017. I grew up here on my grandparents' horse farm," says Sherri Turner, owner of Glory Fields Hometown Nursery. Local businesses, like Glory Fields Hometown Nursery, add a touch of vibrancy to the community. "I specialize in perennials and shrubs for home gardens," Turner says.

Living in Mount Pleasant, some residents take a classic 1900s colonial home and give it a modern spin, including farmhouses that have seen generations grow up, craftsman-style and Second Empire-influenced homes. Whether residing on sprawling acres that afford seclusion or in Cherry Valley Lakeview Estates, there something for everyone. Prices may range from $175,000 for a 1950s ranch home with ample acreage to upwards of $600,000 for a custom-built neo-traditional home with elegant brick and stone masonry situated by the waters of the Cherry Valley Reservoir.

It's all about that small-town feel in the Fort Cherry School District, as both schools are adjacent. Fort Cherry Elementary Center has a grade of a B-minus, according to Niche, offering an 11-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Over at Fort Cherry Junior-Senior High School, it is graded C-plus, according to Niche, and they've got programs prepping students for hands-on trades and STEM careers.

Mount Pleasant's got your back if you're one for the outdoors. The Westland Branch of the Montour Trail follows along the bones of the old Montour Railroad Line, so you're walking through history. While cycling, you'll spot plaques giving you a peek into the region's mining legacy, like the Westland Mine. Outdoor adventures continue at Cross Creek County Park, where hiking trails and waterways call for boating and fishing. The Fort Cherry Golf Club, featuring an 18-hole course and a pro shop, serves as a golfing spot and a sought-after venue for weddings and events.

The Old Schoolhouse Players bring a touch of Broadway to the country. They put on shows right in the historic community center, featuring local talent. Uniquely Yours Tea Room is all about elegance, serving up a tea party experience that's a real treat. Ole Hickory Inn has been here for a long time with a fireplace and vintage games. Though you're far from many things in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania Route 18 and Pennsylvania 50 run through the middle, and you are about 16 miles from the Ohio and West Virginia border. For everyday stuff, there's Dollar General on Main Street, and if you're up for a short drive, Giant Eagle Supermarket in McDonald is about 7 miles away. You're also 13 miles from Washington for Walmart and Sam's Club and 16 miles from Robinson Town Center with Costco, Ikea and Target.

Brown's Orchard and Cider is a must-hit for apples and cider, as apples are big here. A beloved annual event is the Hickory Apple Festival, a fundraiser with a craft fair and rock and roll pet show, and all aspects of a country lifestyle. "It's our claim to fame; with a rural town like this, it's important we support our Mount Pleasant Township Volunteer Fire Department," Turner says. Mount Pleasant Township is the place residents embrace their bucolic heritage "People hold on to their land here; we don't want it to be developed, want to preserve the slowness of it all," Turner says.
