Booker/McAlmont epitomizes convenience. Surrounded on all sides by highways, this mostly industrial and rural area in the heart of North Little Rock serves as a gateway to both major employers and the greater metropolitan area.

Named for a doctor and Confederate Army major who later became mayor of Little Rock, Booker/McAlmont draws in homebuyers seeking inexpensive options compared to surrounding areas, says Alicia Averitt Haley, executive broker for PorchLight Realty. Most homes here are investment opportunities built in the 1960s or before, typically in the form of frame-and-Masonite-siding ranch-style dwellings with narrow yards at asking prices of around $50,000. Along Tammy Lane in the northern end of the community, though, you’ll find newer builds, ranging from partial-brick-and-frame traditional houses with raised decks and wide yards to masonry-made ranch homes with garages and abundant shrubbery. These properties can go for $130,000 and up.

Three highly rated charter schools sit along the neighborhood’s western border. The tuition-free LISA North elementary, middle and high schools – with the latter named the best high school in Little Rock by U.S. News & World Report – emphasize a STEM-driven, college prep-focused curriculum. Harris Elementary also lies in the heart of the neighborhood and serves prekindergarten through sixth grade. It’s one of the most poorly rated schools in the area, but students in the Pulaski County Special School District can apply for their school of choice.

The area north of Harris brims with auto shops, towing and plumbing companies, and contractors, but the biggest employer here – and one of the biggest in all of Pulaski County – is Union Pacific Railroad, which connects almost half of the United States. Its tracks divide most of the area, and one of its largest facilities, the Jenks Shop, lies just south.

After school and work hours, families flock to Gloria Ashley McAlmont Community Park. Fenced-in with a concrete basketball court, a picnic pavilion, a red playset and a broad grassy field, it serves as a socialization epicenter for an otherwise secluded area.

Booker/McAlmont’s dining options are clustered in its southwestern sector, just a hop away from the region’s biggest shopping center, McCain Mall, and Baptist Health Medical Center’s North Little Rock branch. The restaurants here are mostly familiar chains like Raising Cane’s and Arby's, but beloved local eateries await, too. Have your food cooked right before your eyes at Kanpai’s hibachi tables or snag a roll from its extensive sushi menu. Sip on a margarita in between bites of authentic Mexican cuisine like enchiladas and flautas at Cactus Jack’s. For traditional homestyle meals, BJ’s Market Café offers breakfast dishes like western omelets and hearty dinners like chicken fried steak.

An unassuming piece of history stands just a couple blocks north of the park. Once frequented by Arkansas native Johnny Cash, the cone-shaped Roundtop Filling Station – a mix of a red-brick roof, white walls and jungle-green outlines – garnered fame for having the only public restrooms between Bald Knob and Little Rock. Now used by the Sherwood Police Department as a substation, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

A mostly isolated area, Booker/McAlmont directly surrounds North Little Rock’s biggest attractions.
