Pleasant Lane is an expansive rural community with a secluded feel
On any clear day, it’s hard not to roll the windows down on a car ride through Pleasant Lane. The rural community’s sun-soaked roads thread through undisturbed meadows, wide-open crop fields and densely wooded Sumter National Forest. “It’s nature at its best,” says local Realtor Stephanie Holmes of Keller Williams Realty Augusta Partners. She’s sold homes across the region for five years and resides in Edgefield County. “It’s a secluded and wooded organic atmosphere. Most of everything is still very natural.” There are just a few homes spread out on large properties, and Holmes emphasizes that’s why residents love it. “People come here for large tracts of land with space between houses,” she says. “They don’t want to be on top of any neighbors.”
Few homes sit on large plots of land
Pleasant Lane is a very rural community with about 25 homes. Only land plots are for sale, ranging from $7,000 for a third of an acre to $310,000 for 61 acres. Many properties here cover over 20 acres, offering privacy and ample space for animals and crops. “The majority of landowners have large parcels,” Holmes says. “They’re farmers, timber harvesters, hunters or recreational vehicle riders.” Only one home recently sold; a three-bedroom, two-bathroom ranch-style home on a little more than eight acres sold for $272,000.
Outdoor activities in a rural community
Residents tend to enjoy the outdoors in their yards. “A lot of people go hunting and fishing,” Holmes says. “We’re also a big horse community.” The nearest parks and recreation centers are in Edgefield. About 12 miles south, Edgefield Park offers one of the closest playgrounds, plus it has two tennis courts and plenty of green space. Edgefield also runs several youth sports programs at the Edgefield Soccer Complex and the Edgefield Baseball Complex. Lake Murray, about 50 miles east, is popular for weekend trips.
Strom Thurmond High School features a STEAM Academy with various majors
Edgefield County School District scores an overall B on Niche and serves over 3,000 students. W.E. Parker Elementary School receives a B-minus on Niche, and Johnston-Edgefield-Trenton Middle School has a B-minus. Strom Thurmond High School has several career academies with specialized majors. The high school’s STEAM Academy features majors like cybersecurity, welding, military science and visual arts. Niche gives the high school a B-minus.
Milk and eggs at Hickory Hill Farm
Locals can grab milk, eggs and cheese at Hickory Hill Farm. The fourth-generation dairy farm bottles milk on-site five days a week and has a cooler in a red barn along Faulkner Mountain Road. The “honor cooler” isn’t operated by an attendant, so visitors stop by, grab milk and leave cash in a designated bin. Hickory Hill Farm is also a hub for local events, including its annual Fall Farm Nights. The October event offers country or bluegrass bands, wagon rides and food trucks. For bigger grocery hauls, residents head into Edgefield. “It’s not far from Edgefield, which has several restaurants and boutique-style stores,” Holmes says. “All locally and generationally owned.” She highlights Christine’s Farm to Fork, a family-owned spot with a seasonal menu that sources ingredients from local vendors and farmers. The Ole Edgefield Butcher Shop offers various meat cuts and butcher boxes; the seafood box comes with shrimp, sausage, potatoes and corn. KJ’s Market offers big-box grocery shopping options about 12 miles away.
Heading into Augusta or Columbia
Pleasant Lane is a car-dependent community far from busy urban areas; Augusta is about 40 miles south, and Columbia is around 65 miles east. One of the nearest medical facilities is Edgefield County Healthcare, formerly Edgefield County Hospital, about 12 miles south. Augusta Regional Airport offers domestic flights about 45 miles away. Pleasant Lane’s overall CAP Index crime score is 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
