The neighborhood lacks sidewalks and bus stops, making a car necessary for most work and shopping. Hilltop is in the center of a triangle created by Interstate 80, State Route 46 and U.S. Route 422. Hilltop and McDonald in general have little in the way of shopping or dining. “People mostly go to Niles for that,” says Maffei. “There’s the Eastwood Mall and a Walmart in that direction.” Across the Mahoning River in Girard, North State Street has an assortment of familiar and locally owned restaurants. El Jefe is a brightly colored restaurant known for an assortment of Mexican fusion dishes, including the Mexi-Can Burger—a smash burger topped with jalapenos, chipotle mayonnaise and a variety of cheeses.
