Residential community with breathtaking views
In McHenry, Klondike is a residential community in the middle of the Chain O’Lakes waterway system in northeast Illinois. Residents here enjoy breathtaking views of Fox Lake and Grass Lake, proximity to the Wisconsin state line, and a relaxed lifestyle that eschews big-city hustle and bustle. “In the early 1900s, this area was used as a rural getaway for folks living in Chicago. Little summer cabins were the only houses around until the 1950s when people started to live here full time,” says Cheryl Black, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker who has sold homes in Klondike.
Plenty of water accesses and marinas
What Klondike lacks in parks and playgrounds, it makes up for in water accesses and marinas. Inland Harbor Marina is a one-stop boat shop, offering a launch ramp with in-and-out service, docks with gas pumps, a parts shop, and summer and winter storage. Mutiny Boat Club & Pub provides direct access to Grass Lake. Watching the sunset over dinner and drinks on Mutiny’s outdoor patio is a perfect ending to a day spent on the water. In neighboring Lake Villa, open prairies, quiet woodlands and marshes teeming with wildlife await at Grant Woods Forest Preserve.

Homes with good bones
While some new properties were built in the early 2000s, many homes in Klondike retain their original bones. Renovations and expansions are common, and no two houses look the same. Split-level and ranch-style homes mix in with elegant Tudors and modern builds. A ranch-style home with two bedrooms, one bathroom, and a walkout basement sells for $225,000. The price for a three-bed, three-bath colonial house with a wraparound porch is $477,000. No matter the address, all homes in Klondike are less than half a mile from open lake water.
Blarney's Island Boat Race
On Thursdays from Memorial Day to Labor Day, boat races take place at Blarney's Island. Participants in this "race-what-you-came-in" event come from all over the Chain O'Lakes to take on the 800-foot course set in notoriously choppy waters.
From nachos to bison burgers
Klondike has no chain restaurants, but residents can still enjoy a good meal in a comfortable setting. Cuda’s Bar & Grill serves tried-and-true pub fare like smokehouse nachos and stuffed bison burgers. For date night, Cheryl Black recommends El Puerto. “The food is great, and it’s right there on Fox Lake. You eat outside, and it’s just gorgeous,” she says. A car is needed for most errands. Antioch’s downtown area and boutique retail shops are about six miles northeast at the intersection of Illinois Route 73 and Illinois Route 59. There is also a Jewel-Osco and Piggly Wiggly for groceries.
