Wilson Creek offers recreation and top schools

Wilson Creek's abundance of green space and central location make it a popular area of McKinney. It has parks for relaxing and recreation, and several highly rated schools within walking distance of many homes. It also provides easy access to U.S. Highway 75 and historic downtown McKinney. The community’s convenience does not come at the expense of its housing options. “When I moved here, I was warned about living east of 75, but that turned out to be so incorrect,” says Shelly Nutt, an agent with Monument Realty. “There’s a character to the homes and the neighborhood. It’s not a cookie-cutter area.”

Tudor-inspired and traditional homes along winding streets

Hermitage Trail, a half-mile walking path also known as the Wilson Creek Preserve Hike and Bike Trail, divides the neighborhood. Homes to its west are often Tudor-inspired and usually range from $560,000 to $875,000, though some can rise above $1 million. Nutt says the Chapel Hill development gets the best of what the community offers. “It’s a mile walk to the historic district and less than a mile to Towne Hill Park,” Nutt says. “You can watch your grandkids play on the playground or get a cocktail.” Houses to the east are more traditional and often sell for around $270,000 to $400,000. Residential streets use both concrete and asphalt and usually have at least one sidewalk. Front yards generally have small to medium trees.

Highly rated schools with career and technical education classes

Students are served by McKinney Independent School District. They can attend Albert & Iola Lee Davis Malvern Elementary, which earns a B-minus from Niche. Dr. Jack Cockrill Middle receives an A. McKinney High offers career and technical education classes in fields like human services and architecture and construction. It earns an A.

Towne Lake Park access, plus sports facilities and a connecting trail

Towne Lake Park has a full-sized disc golf course, horseshoe and volleyball courts, kayak rentals, a fishing pier, a playground and a pavilion. It also contains the Recreation Center at Towne Lake, which is undergoing updates and will reopen in fall 2025. The park is next to the Grady Littlejohn Softball & Baseball Complex, which has six ball fields with lights. The Wilson Creek Trail connects Towne Lake with other green spaces like Bonnie Wenk Park, which includes an amphitheater and an all-abilities playground. Nearby Finch Park has pickleball courts, sand volleyball courts and several pavilions for gatherings. “My neighbors will bike to Finch Park to play pickleball all the time,” Nutt says. “And it’s an older park, so there are towering trees.” The McKinney Senior Recreation Center has its own pool. The community has several churches, including Milestone Church McKinney Campus, which provides outreach to seniors, veterans and people in need.

Local restaurants and a short drive to Historic Downtown McKinney

A few restaurants sit in the neighborhood’s southwest corner. Venezia Trattoria is an upscale Italian eatery. Genghis Grill lets customers create their own stir-fry. Noodle Wave serves traditional Thai food as well as fusion cuisine. Across Eldorado Parkway is an Albertsons, a Kohl’s and other retail and restaurant options. Just west of U.S. Highway 75 are stores like Trader Joe’s and Belk. Historic downtown McKinney, filled with mom-and-pop stores and locally owned restaurants, is a short walk or drive away. The area also hosts annual events like Mardi Gras and Oktoberfest celebrations.

Easy entry onto U.S. Highway 75 and triple-digit summer heat

U.S. Highway 75 is on the community’s western edge. State Highway 5 is also nearby. Traffic on Wilson Creek Parkway, a main neighborhood road, can get heavy when McKinney High School releases its students. “Everyone tries to get to 75,” Nutt says. “But it’s not going to delay you 30 minutes. Maybe 10 minutes.” The neighborhood is around 35 miles from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. The downtown Dallas is close to a 30-mile drive. McKinney National Airport, nearly 3 miles from the neighborhood, is adding a new commercial air service terminal scheduled to open in late 2026. South McKinney can reach temperatures of 100 degrees or more during the summer. “Everyone either stays inside or goes to the pool,” Nutt says. “I always walk my dog in the morning before it gets too hot.”
