Winding Creek-Hidden Creek is residential with a central location
People living in McKinney's Winding Creek-Hidden Creek neighborhood get a centralized location and high-end homes. The residential community is close to shopping centers, schools and green spaces, but the area itself is calm. It is popular with families, and residents will often see others out on walks, usually with a pet in tow. "It's a cozy area," says Emily Myrick, the digital communications coordinator for Visit McKinney, adding that there are many restaurants and parks within a few miles in every direction.
Traditional homes with brick and stone siding along snaking streets
The neighborhood has a traditional style with brick and stone siding. Houses are spacious, with most properties containing four bedrooms or more. Sidewalks usually flank the area's concrete streets on at least one side. Main roads snake through the community, leading to small pockets of houses. Mailboxes sit in brick holders instead of on posts. Most residences sell for $500,000 to $730,000. Custom homes along a creek or with a lake view can range from $735,000 to $1.5 million.
The McKinney Independent School District gets top marks
Students are served by the McKinney Independent School District. They can attend Roy Lee Walker Elementary School, which has an A Niche grade. Faubion Middle School earns an A-minus. McKinney High School offers career and technical education classes in fields like information technology and agriculture, food and natural resources. It holds an A score. Nearby McKinney Christian Academy gets an A-minus.
Youth sports facilities, playgrounds and a busy outdoor summer pool
Hill Top Park has a picnic area, a playground and an open field typically used for sports practices. Nearby, Katherine B. Winniford Park has a multipurpose court, an open field, a fishing pond, and a jungle gym. Bonnie Wenk Park hosts summer concerts at its amphitheater and has an all-abilities playground and a fishing area. A few miles away, Gabe Nesbitt Community Park hosts many of the area's youth sports games. It is also the home of the Apex Centre, a recreation hub that operates a busy outdoor pool each summer. "It has an outdoor splash pad for younger kids, and there are three water slides and a small lazy river," says Emily Myrick, the digital communications coordinator for Visit McKinney. "It just has a lot of variation. It's my personal favorite." Adults can check out Painting with a Twist along Hardin Boulevard for a night of creating art and drinking wine. Christ Fellowship, a neighboring church, provides outreach to people in the community and volunteers with many local organizations.
Italian food, ice cream and nearby retail stores
Restaurants like Stop-N-Go Gyros, a fast-casual Greek eatery, sit off Eldorado Parkway on the community's southern edge. Tutto Italian Kitchen, which offers authentic entrees and desserts for pick up or delivery only, is east of the neighborhood. To the west is Handel's Ice Cream, an old-school parlor that rotates through more than 100 flavors. Kroger and Tom Thumb are nearby. The community is around 3 miles from retail stores like Belk and Kohl's.
Access to major highways and sweltering summers
The neighborhood is a few miles from state highways 75 and 121, plus Sam Rayburn Tollway. "Traffic is nothing too crazy," Myrick says of the area. "You'll get rush hour congestion on 75, but that's it." Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is around 30 miles away, and the Dallas Downtown Historic District is about a 35-mile drive. Summers commonly reach triple-digit temperatures.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
