Housing in high demand

There's also a fair share of tenant-occupied properties, many of which are leased by Tufts University students, with a price range of $3,000 to $5,000 per month. Housing demand in Medford Hillside is fierce, just as it is elsewhere in the city. “There is a great demand in the entire city of Medford because of housing shortages,” says Veneziano. Green Line
Boston commuters can quickly hop on the Green Line to reach the state capital. The city’s Green Line Extension project brought the Medford/Tufts stop to the area in December 2022. Riders can reach Downtown Boston in just over 30 minutes. “The transportation’s definitely the key for why people would want to live there,” Veneziano says. The station sits on the thoroughfare of Boston Avenue, right across from Tufts University.Dining on Boston Avenue
Convenience stores, restaurants, cafes, and other eateries can be found on Boston Avenue. “The restaurants all seem to be popular because I’m always waiting in line,” says Veneziano. Tasty Cafe & Kitchen is one of those well-regarded spots. Patrons especially enjoy the restaurant’s filling Portuguese-style Francesinha sandwiches, slathered with melted cheese. Across the street, The Danish Pastry House serves specialty lattes, cakes, cookies and other baked goods. About a half-mile north, Whole Foods Market provides organic produce.
Community day and outdoor movies
Sitting on about 150 acres, the private university brings the neighborhood together with its annual Community Day on campus, held in the fall, which features live music, kids' activities and free food. During the summer months, the Medford Recreation Department hosts free outdoor movies in Tufts Park.
Medford High School offers vocational-technical school
Children in the area can attend Brooks Elementary School, which serves pre-kindergarten to fifth grade students and receives a B on Niche. For pre-kindergarten to eighth grade, students may attend West Somerville Neighborhood School, which also receives a B on Niche. Medford High School is well-regarded, receiving a B rank, and features a vocational-technical school offering education in disciplines like carpentry, culinary arts, graphic design and metal fabrication. For higher education, students may attend the renowned Tufts University.
Tufts Park and Cummings Park
Many area residents utilize Tufts Park, near the university. The roughly 11-acre facility features multiple athletic fields, a playground, a pool and a basketball court. Cummings Park, a half-acre space with a playground, a pavilion, and a half-court basketball area, is another play area for residents. A natural recreation hub, Medford Hillside runs along part of Mystic River. Locals may kayak or canoe in the river and practice catch-and-release fishing. For a scenic walk, follow the Mystic River Path.Important to know
There is a moderate risk of flooding in the Medford area, especially close to the Mystic River. Heavy rainfall often leads to flooding, which the City of Medford is hoping to mitigate through the Municipal Vulnerability Project grant. This grant will allow the City of Medford to respond to environmental disasters with nature-based strategies.
