Local businesses and nonprofits elevate Liberty Park
Liberty Park is situated just north of downtown Medford, between the busy commercial stretches of Riverside Avenue and Central Avenue. Despite its proximity to shopping and major thoroughfares, the neighborhood has the lowest average home value in Medford. Jerry Woodard, a manager at Tom’s Guitars—which has been in the neighborhood since the 1980s—points out the positive effect that local businesses and nonprofits have in Liberty Park. Case in point: Kids Unlimited of Oregon, a youth enrichment nonprofit, and its Kids Unlimited Academy, a public charter school. “Kids Unlimited has built out their space […] and things around there are coming up because of that,” he says. Another nonprofit, Living Opportunities, has also set up shop in the neighborhood, providing services for those with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
Smoothie shops and restaurants on Riverside Drive
Riverside Drive is Liberty Park’s main destination for popular restaurants and neighborhood small businesses. Fiesta Restaurant and Market offers authentic Mexican dishes and an extensive Latin market under one red-tiled roof. Patrons can enjoy steaming fajita platters or traditional menudo beef tripe stew before picking up their favorite imported products or fresh ingredients at the market. Tequila Night Club—with its entrance at the back of the restaurant—plays Latin hits later in the evening. Northwest Pine Apple provides the neighborhood with refreshing acai bowls, smoothies and cold-pressed juices crafted from all-natural, healthy ingredients. For a more filling snack, they also offer avocado toast and chocolate banana toast. When locals want to make their own fresh meals at home, they can head to Trader Joe’s, just north of the neighborhood, or Safeway across the interstate.

Riverside and Central Avenues connect to downtown
Liberty Park features access to several of Medford’s most critical thoroughfares. Riverside Avenue—also referred to as State Route 99—travels north to the Rogue Valley Mall and south to Downtown Medford. It also features several of the area’s popular restaurants and mainstay neighborhood businesses, like Tom’s Guitars and Sign Dude. Otherwise, drivers can take Central Avenue in the west of the neighborhood to reach Downtown Medford. Interstate 5, which also traverses Liberty Park, takes travelers south to Ashland and across the California border.
College credit courses at South Medford High
Children in Liberty Park may attend Jackson Elementary School, which receives a C from Niche, before moving on to C-plus-rated McLoughlin Middle School. Afterward, they may enroll at B-rated South Medford High School and earn college credit there through courses with Rogue Community College or Southern Oregon University. Older Liberty Park homes popular among tenants
Many of the residents of Liberty Park are renters, though buyers and investors are drawn to the neighborhood because of its lower price point. “It’s sandwiched between two through streets, so it’s a busy area,” says Rachel White, a real estate agent with eXp Realty, LLC. “It’s a little neighborhood that has Central and Riverside [Avenues] on either side of it.”
Most homes were built in the first half of the 20th century, with 1930 being the median construction year in the neighborhood. One-level cottages and bungalows with Craftsman details usually cost between $250,000 and $325,000. For between $130,000 and $200,000, buyers will find two-bedroom homes that require some repairs. Homes with well-tended gardens often feature fences in the front yard. Residents in the southwest corner of Liberty Park may hear the chug of the Central Oregon and Pacific Railroad passing through the neighborhood.

Skate ramps shaded by the Interstate 5 bridge
Liberty Park—the greenspace the neighborhood is named after—consists of a bright patch of grass next to a play set. Hawthorne Park, just across Jackson Street and the interstate, features 20 acres and several amenities. After the $2-million renovation it underwent in 2015 and 2016, the park offers a large playground, a basketball court, a splash pad and two off-leash dog areas. The park’s skate area is shaded by the Interstate 5 bridge, where skaters can pick up speed on ramps and rails amidst bridge pillars decorated with colorful murals. The Bear Creek Greenway trail runs through the wooded area west of Interstate 5, though it’s a popular gathering place for the unhoused.
