Appleton - a rainforest community
Named after its grove of apple trees, Appleton is burrowed beneath a dense rainforest on the east side of Mercer Island, a small city roughly 5 miles from Seattle. Known for its winding roads and abundant greenery, Appleton is a secluded community in leafy Cascadia. "Mercer Island offers residents the best of both worlds with just a 10-minute drive to Seattle or Bellevue," says Lori Holden, a lifelong native of Mercer Island and Broker at John L Scott Realty. "Both sides of the island are beautiful. Residents can choose either the west side's sunny openness or the east side's woodsy charm."

Modern architecture among the trees
Winding streets stretch through the hills around a thick forest of ferns, spruce and vine maple trees that form shady canopies above the neighborhood. Appleton architecture features modern and raised ranch-style homes with wrap-around decks that provide a social space among the trees. Many higher-end properties span over 3,500 square feet. Some floor plans incorporate midcentury-style architecture with rooms that have floor-to-ceiling windows that let in a lot of natural light and give living spaces an outdoor feel. Given their high demand, longstanding homes in Appleton rarely go on the market. Prices range from $1.4 million to $5.7 million, depending on size and proximity to Lake Washington.
Homes on private drives in Appleton are usually 3 store custom built craftsman architecture.

Car-dependent and short commute to Seattle
Appleton is a car-dependent neighborhood. Mercer Island has public transportation through the King County Metro and the Sound Transit bus systems, with bus stops along Island Crest Way, about a mile east. Mercer Way is the area’s main road that leads north to Interstate 90. From Appleton, Seattle is roughly 8 miles west on I-90. “It’s the best of both worlds. It’s a small town that feels close to Seattle, but you can get home in 10 minutes. That’s what I love most about living here,” says Alexa Luckembach, Resident Services Manager at Island Square Apartments. For air travel, the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is around 20 miles west.
