Historic charm in East Seattle

In the late 1800s, East Seattle was one of the isle's first investment properties. Today, East Seattle is a peaceful island reprieve with waterfront views, historic charm and an easy commute to the "Emerald City," which is only about 5 miles west. "East Seattle was the first area settled on Mercer Island," says Lori Holden, Broker and Lifestyle Specialist with John L Scott Real Estate, who grew up on Mercer Island. "Named for its location - east of Seattle, it has a high concentration of vintage homes that initially served as vacation cottages for the early settlers, with some over 100 years old. Located near a former ferry landing, now replaced by the I-90 bridge, this area offers stunning views of the Seattle skyline, the Olympic Mountains and Seward Park."

Vintage traditional homes on Lake Washington

East Seattle's all-encompassing properties are well-landscaped, lined with tall hedges, trim trees and rose bushes. Some multilevel homes have picturesque views of Lake Washington from the upper floors. Homes also double in square footage and price heading north, reaching 4,000 square feet for estate-sized mansions. On 60th Avenue exist some of the island's most desirable housing stock, with older traditional homes overlooking Lake Washington. "While many charming original cottages remain, large waterfront estates have since been built, taking full advantage of these spectacular views and convenient location," says Holden. East Seattle also has eclectic architecture from the 20th century, with bungalows alongside traditional and contemporary styles. Prices range from $1.4 million to $4 million, depending on size. Homes with less than 2,500 square feet range from $1.4 million to $3 million, while homes over 3,500 square feet go for $3.5 million to $4 million.

Calkins Landing and lakeside recreation

East Seattle features waterside parks overflowing with history, like Calkins Landing. In the late 1800s, Calkins Landing was a port for a 78-foot steamboat making daily trips into the city. Today, it is a simple wooden dock for much smaller vessels like kayaks and paddleboards. "People definitely use the lake," says Alexa Luckembach, Resident Services Manager at Island Square Apartments. "There are a lot of people out walking their dogs. There are a lot of trails and parks right on the water where people can put their boats out." Slater Park is a green space on a decline with park benches and places to swim by Lake Washington. Proctor Landing has a concrete dock with rocky shores that brush against the surf. Hidden below the Mercer Way route, there are a swing set and a toddler-friendly play structure in a shady wood-chip area. First Hill Park provides another playground with an open field surrounded by towering pine trees.

The air show and boat racing at Seafair

Seafair is one of Seattle’s most popular annual festivals, and East Seattle has a front-row seat to the action. Here, hydroplane boats race, and the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels conduct an air show overhead. This longstanding tradition includes week-long festivities such as live music and shoreline gatherings during the last week in July.

Public transportation and 5 miles from Seattle

East Seattle is a car-dependent neighborhood, although two public bus services serve Mercer Island: King County Metro and Sound Transit. Bus stops are along 24th Street, near East Seattle and throughout the city center. Mercer Way reaches Interstate 90 and Interstate 5, providing a direct route to Downtown Seattle, roughly 5 miles west. Tacoma is about 36 miles south. The Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, or Sea-Tac (SEA), is around 17 miles south and provides international flights.

Downtown Mercer Island

East Seattle is also close to Mercer Island’s downtown area, including art galleries and modern restaurants. For groceries, QFC is on 28th Street, while Metropolitan Market has a bakery, a butcher shop and an upscale inventory on 77th Avenue.
