Cedar forests and a beach on the island's 'gold coast'

Through neatly trimmed hedges and walls of ivy, Groveland reveals the blue surface of Lake Washington on Mercer Island, a floating city on Interstate 90 between Seattle and Bellevue. Originally the site of a summer bible camp, Groveland is known for its cedar forests around Groveland Beach Park, the only public beach on the island's radiant west coast. "The west side of Mercer Island has been called the 'gold coast' because it is so desirable," says Sarah Ford, a local who lives on the island and a Sales Associate at Coldwell Banker Realty with over 20 years of experience. "The views are pretty, and you get longer days of sunlight, which is important in Seattle."

Swimming at Groveland Beach

One of the neighborhood's most popular attractions is Groveland Beach Park, with stone-covered shores, a sandy beach and a concrete fishing pier. The pier provides access to deeper waters for swimming, and a beach volleyball court leaves room for competition. While Island Crest Park is more difficult to reach by car, a densely wooded trail connects Mercer Way to the park's entrance. Island Crest is best known for its turf-field baseball diamonds and tennis courts. Pioneer Park is an old-growth forest with diverse habitats spanning 113 acres and over 6 miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails. "Pioneer Park has trails that go through, but we try to keep it as natural as possible," says Olivia Ryan, Recreation Assistant at Mercer Island Community & Event Center. "We host volunteer events where people pull out blackberry bushes and maintain the trails."

Restaurants at Mercer Village

While Mercer Island has fewer dining options than surrounding cities, this community has plenty of restaurant staples. Mercer Village is a center for convenience in the southern portion of the island with establishments like Riviera Maya, a Mexican cantina serving margaritas and vegetarian burritos. Yuzen Japanese Cuisine is another option serving sushi and udon noodles in a bright dining space with a modern atmosphere. QFC is Groveland's supermarket in Mercer Village. The island's downtown offers more restaurants and shops about 3 miles north.

Seafair summer

The Seafair Festival is a can't-miss event for Mercer Island residents. This festival features boat parties, hydroplane races and a Boeing airshow by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. At the beginning of August, the community heads to the island's west side, where air shows occur above the lake, with prime viewing at Groveland Beach Park. "The air show is very popular on the island. We've had to put a capacity on Groveland Beach Park because so many people were out," Ryan says.

Getting to Seattle

Groveland residents rely on personal vehicles for transportation. King County Metro and Sound Transit are two bus systems that serve the island with a park-and-ride area at Mercer Village. The 630 shuttle operates on weekdays, taking passengers to the "Emerald City." Interstate 90 is a floating expressway on the water that reaches multiple cities from Mercer Island. Downtown Seattle is about 8 miles northwest of Groveland on I-90, while Bellevue is roughly 6 miles northeast. The Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is about 20 miles southwest for worldwide travel.
