Parkwest
Ranch-style homes and towering pines line Mercer Island streets
Homes in Parkwest are primarily ranch styles, often with midcentury modern or contemporary features. Many have large windows allowing for plenty of sunlight, while spacious porches offer room to sit and enjoy the view. Other styles include Craftsman and 1970s contemporary. Towering pine trees and large shrubs line the streets, expanding the natural feel throughout the community. Tien says the neighborhood has height restrictions, ensuring no homes will block their neighbors’ view. Houses in the area typically cost between $2 million and $4.8 million. The neighborhood has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.Natural areas provide room to explore in local parks
Island Crest Park is a large green space with developed and natural areas. The park has tennis courts, a playground, and two baseball fields on its east side, including one with synthetic turf also used for soccer. Dense foliage covers the west side and trails wind through the forest. Pioneer Park is the largest natural area on the island, with 113 acres and over 6 miles of trails. “The entrance to the park is an ADA-accessible 1-mile loop. It’s dirt, so it’s still like you’re in the forest, but you can walk around with a stroller,” Tien says. The park’s trails are also open to horseback riders, and dogs are allowed off-leash in the forest. Groveland Beach Park is west of the community and has a beach, pier, playground and sand volleyball court. While Parkwest has no waterfront properties, multiple boat launches are around the island for residents who own a boat, and the nearby Mercer Island Beach Club offers a marina for its members.Locally owned restaurants are just down the street
Shopping and dining options are close by, with Mercer Village Shopping Center south of the neighborhood. This plaza has a mix of chains and locally owned businesses. “There’s a Starbucks with an outdoor fireplace. It’s very common for people to meet at the park, walk the dog, and then go have a cup of coffee afterwards,” Tien says. “There’s a fabulous Japanese restaurant, a very well-regarded Mexican restaurant. We have a chocolatier. She makes her own chocolate and has been around for 40 years.” Groceries are available at the QFC in the shopping center. More grocery stores are on the island’s northern end, but residents will have to leave the island for other shopping. The Marketplace at Factoria in Bellevue is a large mall with a Target, Nordstrom Rack and Old Navy.Students receive quality education at highly rated Mercer Island schools
Island Park Elementary School and Islander Middle School serve the neighborhood, and each gets an A from Niche. Both are close by, and Tien says many students walk to school. Mercer Island High School is on the north side and gets an A-plus. The high school offers several programs to prepare students for college or careers, including dual enrollment and classes in industries like accounting, engineering, marketing and robotics. It’s also known for its marching band, which has played in the Rose Parade and Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.Driving or taking the bus around the Seattle metro region
Parkwest residents can walk to the nearby shopping center and parks but will likely drive to get anywhere else. East Mercer Way, West Mercer Way and Island Crest Way all provide north-south routes through the island. Interstate 90 crosses the island’s north side, connecting to Bellevue and Seattle. Two bus routes pass through the neighborhood; Route 204 connects to the island's northern part, while Route 630 takes riders into downtown Seattle.
