Older and newer homes in the millions, and some condos
Single-family home options include 1950s to '70s ramblers and traditionals, many of which have been remodeled. Prices range from about $1.7 million to $2.4 million for these older homes. In contrast, larger contemporary homes dating to the 2010s and on are typically $3 million to $4.5 million. The island's largest apartment community is here. Not all of Shorewood has sidewalks, though there are areas where it's walkable. Cul-de-sacs are common, and Pirzio-Biroli says there's not too much traffic. North of I-90, a paved multiuse path runs alongside Mercer Way, which loops the island and has bike lanes. Though many people drive, there's also a Sound Transit bus route from Seattle to Bellevue. The King County Metro DART connects the south and north parts of the island and operates a shuttle to Downtown Seattle. The East Link project, Sound Transit's Link light rail extension to the island, was still in the works in 2025. When finished, the Mercer Island Station will be in the center of I-90, close to the Mercer Island Park-and-Ride.Independently owned businesses and a farmers market
Northwest of the neighborhood is Mercer Island Town Center, a retail area. Oh Chocolate!, Island Books, and Volver Records are some of the island's independently owned stores. This area is also the location of the island's biggest apartment community, Shorewood. "Many people have lived in Shorewood while looking for a home to purchase. Back in the '50s, my parents lived there before they bought their house," Pirzio-Biroli says. The complex was once the home of President Obama's mother, who graduated from Mercer Island High School in 1960.
