A quiet, somewhat secluded neighborhood on the south end
Tarywood is in southeast Mercer Island, which is a small city set in Lake Washington. The neighborhood is about 4 miles south of Interstate 90, which links the island to Seattle and Bellevue. There are numerous evergreens and other trees along the residential streets, which usually don't have sidewalks. Tarywood's out-of-the-way location and natural surroundings bring some seclusion and rural vibes. "It's nice and quiet, and there are parks. You have to get on or off the island, so it's protected and fairly crime-free," Andrea Pirzio-Biroli, a managing broker with John L Scott Real Estate.

Midcentury moderns, contemporaries and spacious custom homes
The south end of the island was developed after the north. "Mercer Way used to be a gravel road, houses were on septic systems and had wells," says Pirzio-Biroli, who grew up on the island. In the 1950s, sewers and the water system were constructed on the north end, and the south end soon followed.
The neighborhood has single-family homes in developments like Tarywood Estates, which was created in the 1960s and includes midcentury modern architecture. Tarywood Park, added in the 1980s, has traditionals and contemporaries. There are also homes from more recent decades. Those under 2,500 square feet typically range from about $1.2 million to $3 million.
Estate-like homes with over 6,000 square feet are pricier, ranging from $4.5 million to $18 million. Some are waterfront properties with views of the lake and Mount Rainier.
The CAP Index Crime Score in Tarywood is 1 out of 10, lower when compared to the national average of 4.

From the south to north end of the island and beyond
Tarywood is one of the island neighborhoods farthest from I-90, which connects to the mainland via floating bridges. Pirzio-Biroli says cyclists like to take Mercer Way around the island: "It kind of curves around, passing beautiful houses, and there's not too much traffic."King County Metro DART runs between the south and north parts of the island, with stops on Island Crest Way and at Mercer Village Shopping Center. There's a park-and-ride at the shopping center and another north of I-90. DART has a shuttle to Seattle, and Sound Transit has a bus from Seattle to Bellevue. Sound Transit's Link light rail extension was anticipated to be completed in 2025.
