Upscale homes and exclusive amenities define Meridian Hills

Meridian Hills is a small but affluent town about 9 miles north of downtown Indianapolis characterized by its eclectic mix of non-HOA single-family homes in a serene, wooded setting. This Washington Township community of about 1,800 is anchored by one of the state’s top private schools and a members-only country club that is more than 100 years old.

"A desirable place to live, with upscale homes"

While single-level, midcentury ranch-style designs are the most common housing option, the community is most notable for its diverse mix of larger homes. “It’s a desirable place to live, with upscale homes and an upscale environment,” says Bruce Higgins, who grew up in Meridian Hills and now works for the F.C. Tucker Company. Standout offerings include traditional architectural styles such as Colonial Revival and French Provincial and contemporary styles such as Modern Farmhouse. Meridian Hills was incorporated in 1937, and the oldest homes date to the 1920s. “The homes are very well-maintained,” Higgins says. “A lot of them have been updated, but they retain the charm of the past.” Prices range from the low $300,000s for a two-bedroom home built in the 1950s to the high $2 millions for a five-bedroom home built in the 2010s.

St. Luke Catholic School, which serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade, is also in Meridian Hills. In addition, the community is served by the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township. The district allows students to apply for transfers to schools outside of their geographic zones.

Meridian Restaurant, Hollyhock Hill are local institutions

Residents enjoy a pair of well-established dining destinations nearby. Just north of the neighborhood is Hollyhock Hill, which opened in 1928. “It looks like an old house. They have this Indianapolis fried chicken that they're well known for,” says Cara Conde of Circle 8, who specializes in luxury home sales. Just a short drive south is Meridian Restaurant and Bar, which serves up New American comfort food. “That place is almost like an institution; it's been there forever,” Conde says.
A Meijer, Target and Walmart are convenient shopping options along nearby Keystone Parkway. That corridor leads to the Shops at River Crossing and the Fashion Mall at Keystone, which offer a variety of additional shopping options in an area that also has several restaurants.
