A tale of two townships

The Pike/District area contains two townships of Berks County: Pike Township and District Township. The townships were originally part of the larger Oley area back in the 1700s but were eventually considered independent areas, remote from surrounding settlements. Today, the townships are still regarded as remote, and residents are passionate about preserving their views of undeveloped land and historic structures. "District and Pike are very similar; both have wooded areas, scenic views and houses that don't butt up against each other," explains Christopher King with Realty ONE Group Exclusive, who has several years of experience in the area. "You have to go out of your way to run into your neighbors out there." Located near the intersection of the counties of Berks, Lehigh and Mongomery, the Pike/District area offers private rural living halfway between Reading and Allentown.

Properties with large private lots

The Pike/District area is mainly rural, and home prices vary depending on lot size. Ranch-style homes go for $200,000 for half an acre, $300,000 for 3 acres, and $500,000 for 20 acres. Several contemporary homes offer large walls of windows to appreciate the natural surroundings in the privacy of secluded locations. These modern properties range from $500,000 to $600,000 and are often set back from main roads. And for those who want to live in a piece of history, stone farmhouses from the early 1800s with 40-plus acres of land get up to $1 million to $2 million. "In terms of price point, the area is more comparable to Lehigh County pricing than Berks County pricing," King explains. "You might get a lower price point out in northwest Berks County, but some people prefer the central location of District and Pike."

Two school districts

Residents of the District Township are served by the Brandywine Heights School District, which gets an overall C-plus rating from Niche. Over in the Pike Township, students are a part of the Oley Valley School District, which picks up a B rating. Kids in this district start at Oley Valley Elementary, rated B-minus, before moving on to Oley Valley Middle, rated B. The Oley Valley Senior High School, rated B-minus, is known for its Future Farmers of America (FFA) as part of an agricultural science program that offers opportunities to travel and get hands-on experience.

Local parks and outdoor activities

Residents of Pike enjoy access to Weidner Grove Park, a popular place for small community gatherings with two pavilions, a band shell and an open field. Over in District, Gordon Park has a baseball field, volleyball pit and tennis courts. Several horse stables are scattered throughout the farmland, and the creeks running through the townships offer places to go fishing. Locals also enjoy hunting across the State Game Lands throughout Berks County.

Highway dining

The townships' shopping and dining are limited to animal feed stores and small farm stands. So, residents head over to State Route 73, which is lined with several eateries. Antonio's Trattoria is a popular stop for pizza, serving a selection of beers made in Pennsylvania. The Pleasantville Diner offers a retro feel for brunch, and The Bridge Inn is an upscale option for date nights. For groceries, residents head a few miles into Oley, which has a Weis Markets or into Boyertown for a Giant.

Surrounding small-town celebrations

There is little in the way of community centers in the Pike/District areas, so if residents are looking for town celebrations or seasonal gatherings, they tend to head to one of the many surrounding towns. Oley is just a few miles away and is known for its Oley Community Fair in September. Boyertown and Topton are both 5 miles away and known for their Halloween parades. And Kutztown, about 8 miles north, is home to the oldest Folk Festival in the United States, which celebrates the Pennsylvania Dutch heritage of the region.

Travel to the big cities

The Pike/District area is halfway from Reading to Allentown, about 15 miles from each city. "One of the biggest draws is that you get rural country living but are also centrally located," King explains. "You're about 30 minutes from everything in the area: downtown Reading, Quakertown, city hospitals and the Lehigh International Airport." The area is consequently popular with commuting workers looking to come home from a long day to a home in the quiet countryside.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
