Where ‘Urban Living Meets Country Life’
Named after a Book of Mormon prophet, Mesa’s Lehi community was settled in the 1870s by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Old Fort Utah monument, a stone structure with a bell in the middle, sits in the heart of the community and serves as a reminder of the original settlement. Today, Lehi is among the metro Phoenix communities that still embrace some of the Old West culture. While new developments have sprung up in recent years, the area still has spacious rural lots that allow homeowners to keep animals like horses and chickens. In fact, the community’s motto on its official website says: “Where Urban Living Meets Country Life.” “I think part of its draw is the historic character, and also the rural, agricultural area it presents. It allows people to have larger properties. If they want to have livestock or just open space, it allows that to happen,” says Mesa Councilman Mark Freeman, whose district covers Lehi.
Many residents of Lehi have large plots of land and care for horses and other large animals.

Rural ramblers and a growing number of contemporary Spanish-style homes
The west side of Lehi has ramblers and Spanish-influenced houses on lots made up of low-cut grass and dirt. With some measuring a few acres, these fenced-in properties make room for multiple cars, farm equipment and animals. “One of the advantages is probably the rural aspect. You don’t feel like you’re in a crowded city. You feel like there’s space between yourself and your neighbors,” says Erin Newman, broker for Erin Newman Fine Homes, who’s made several deals in Mesa. Contemporary Traditional houses with Spanish touches are more common on the east end. That part of Lehi is home to newer communities like the Lehi Crossing subdivision, which sits along a road that was widened within the past several years. Single-family homes here mostly run between $450,000 and $800,000, but several larger ones with footprints of at least a few thousand square feet exceed $1 million. “Our communities have just skyrocketed in prices because of the demand. People are still moving here,” Newman says.
Homes in Lehi range from condos to multi-million dollar estates.

The Sun Circle Trail along the South Canal leads to the Park of the Canals. Park visitors can take their children to the playground or relax in the Brinton Desert Botanical Garden, which features a variety of cacti and many other desert shrubs. There’s the Mesa Historical Museum south of the Old Fort Utah monument for more academic-oriented activities. Visitors to the museum can see exhibits about Mesa’s history and a replica schoolhouse.
