The rapid growth of North Center
With the rapid growth of the Phoenix area, it wasn’t that long ago that the North Center neighborhood of Mesa looked a little different. “When I was a kid, this was a lot more rural, almost farmland,” says Marie Van Cleve, a Realtor with One Stop Realty who grew up in the area. “We had chickens and goats in our backyard.” Since then, new developments have helped change the character of North Center to a more suburban environs, while the neighborhood still pays homage to both its ancient and more recent history.

Diverse home styles and prices
The wide main roads of Mesa give way to suburban streets in North Center, flanked by acacia trees and small yards. In their fenced-off backyards, houses commonly have swimming pools to cool off in the Arizona sun. While the homes in the neighborhood are similar stylistically, the price range is wide. Many of the smaller ranch-style homes without many upgrades can be found in the $200,000s, while luxury desert properties can go between $950,000 and $1.2 million. Between these two options are plenty of late 20th-century homes with Craftsman influences, the majority of which are priced in the $500,000s, and the Hohokam Hills development of Pueblo and Spanish-style homes, generally in the $300,000s.

Park of the Canals exploring North Center’s history
The residents of North Center recognize their area’s history, and nowhere in the neighborhood embodies that more than Park of the Canals. Much of Mesa was built around ancient Hohokam canals, and the park allows opportunities to walk along them as well as learn about the Arizona desert at the Brinton Desert Botanical Garden. This garden holds examples of cacti from the four types of deserts found in Arizona. Park of the Canals also includes a playground for neighborhood kids to play at.

Local restaurants, and shopping in Mesa
North Center doesn’t have many local dining options, but it does have plenty of chains. “There’s one intersection in the neighborhood that has burger chains on each corner,” Van Cleve says. “But there are a few good local options, Blue 32 Sports Grill is a favorite of ours and Perla Negra is great if you like seafood. They have good ceviche.” For groceries and other essentials, the Walmart Neighborhood Market on McKellips Road is convenient to the neighborhood, while downtown Mesa’s shopping and entertainment is a short drive away.
