North Center
Diverse home styles and prices
The wide main roads of Mesa give way to suburban streets in North Center, flanked by acacia trees and small yards. In their fenced-off backyards, houses commonly have swimming pools to cool off in the Arizona sun. While the homes in the neighborhood are similar stylistically, the price range is wide. Many of the smaller ranch-style homes without many upgrades can be found in the $200,000s, while luxury desert properties can go between $950,000 and $1.2 million. Between these two options are plenty of late 20th-century homes with Craftsman influences, the majority of which are priced in the $500,000s, and the Hohokam Hills development of Pueblo and Spanish-style homes, generally in the $300,000s.Education in the Mesa Unified School District
The largest school district in the state of Arizona, the Mesa Unified School District encompasses the North Center neighborhood. Students in North Center start at Kerr Elementary School, which received a C grade from Niche and offers a unique agriscience program. Kids get a chance to learn hands-on both in the school’s gardens and with farm animals. Kino Junior High School also earned a C grade, while Westwood High School was given a B-plus.Park of the Canals exploring North Center’s history
The residents of North Center recognize their area’s history, and nowhere in the neighborhood embodies that more than Park of the Canals. Much of Mesa was built around ancient Hohokam canals, and the park allows opportunities to walk along them as well as learn about the Arizona desert at the Brinton Desert Botanical Garden. This garden holds examples of cacti from the four types of deserts found in Arizona. Park of the Canals also includes a playground for neighborhood kids to play at.Local restaurants, and shopping in Mesa
North Center doesn’t have many local dining options, but it does have plenty of chains. “There’s one intersection in the neighborhood that has burger chains on each corner,” Van Cleve says. “But there are a few good local options, Blue 32 Sports Grill is a favorite of ours and Perla Negra is great if you like seafood. They have good ceviche.” For groceries and other essentials, the Walmart Neighborhood Market on McKellips Road is convenient to the neighborhood, while downtown Mesa’s shopping and entertainment is a short drive away.Convenience across the Valley
While the Valley Metro transportation system reaches Mesa, the vast majority of North Center residents own cars and drive to their nearby destinations. This includes downtown Mesa, as the restaurants, museums, and other entertainment options on Main Street are less than a 10-minute drive from North Center. The neighborhood also offers easy access across the Valley via the 202 — downtown Phoenix and Sky Harbor International Airport are each less than 30 minutes away.MLB spring training in the neighborhood
As is the case across the Phoenix metro area, spring training baseball descends upon North Center for the months of February and March each year. The Oakland Athletics call the neighborhood’s Hohokam Stadium home for the team’s spring training games, and the team practices at a facility half a mile away at Fitch Park in the neighboring Park Center Place.
