Early New Orleans suburb includes a shopping destination
One of the earliest modern suburbs to pop up around New Orleans, the downtown faubourgs technically have Bonnabel Place beat by a couple hundred years. But few homebuyers of today would call The Marigny or Treme a suburb. Meanwhile, standout schools, large homes and family-friendly parades and other events make the Metairie neighborhood of Bonnabel Place precisely that. This quaint community sits right across the 17th Street Canal from the New Orleans city limits and is distinguished from the rest of Metairie for its corridor of popular businesses that draw in activity without trampling over peaceful day-to-day. "I would call it the main hub of that area," says Realtor Ken Hamrick. "From the Causeway to what we call the end of Jefferson Parish, which is the 17th Street Canal, that seems to be the most popular place for people to go."

Growing square footage and prices
The passage of time in adjacent neighborhoods has led to many original midcentury ranchers and bungalows beginning to disappear from Bonnabel Place. "With that being one of the oldest neighborhoods, what you see is a lot of those smaller homes are torn down and bigger homes are built because it's on the other side of the interstate from what is considered a higher end of Metairie," Hamrick says. Particularly since Hurricane Katrina, homes in the neighborhood have gotten bigger and sleeker, including a few condos and townhouses near the outskirts, which typically sell for the lowest range of $100,000 to $250,000. Remaining midcentury designs, typically sold as ranchers or cottages, tend to sell for between $125,000 and $525,000. Larger new construction that has replaced original homes tend to cost the most, often beginning around $600,000 and reaching close to or over $1 million.

Wining and dining at Martin's
Veteran's Boulevard is where locals satisfy their cravings for tasty meals and entertainment. A trip in either direction might end with a hefty roast beef sandwich in the casual environment of Giorlando's Restaurant, or an evening of surf and turf in the upscale, canal-side dining room of Desi Vega's Seafood and Prime Steaks. Multiple grocery stores line Veteran's Boulevard, including the gourmet magnet Dorignac's Food Center. But the real gem of the bunch is a location for Martin's, which is no ordinary wine store. "The people there are extremely knowledgeable, and it's very much a small family feel to the business," Hamrick says. "Their lunch business is bigger than I've ever seen someone have a lunch business."

Family-friendly carnival and holiday parades
What is arguably the main strip of Bonnabel Place is also not its busiest. But the latter changes on holidays like St. Patrick's Day, and especially when Mardi Gras season hits. Suddenly, Bonnabel Boulevard becomes alight with parades that offer a taste of Big Easy culture, albeit with some key differences from the parades downtown. "The Metairie parades are much more family attended just because I think people feel safer out there," Hamrick says. "The crowds aren't quite as large, so you don't feel like you're getting trampled."

Mingling at Lakeshore Playground and Library
Lakeshore Playground is the leading community space for Bonnabel Place considering its almost daily pilgrimage of Little League Baseball and other youth sports leagues. In addition to four baseball diamonds, the park also includes a jungle gym and tennis court for additional activities. On rainy days, the Lakeshore Library branch is located right across the street and offers indoor programs such as Movie Maker Mondays and Video Game Day. When the weather is especially sublime, reaching Lake Pontchartrain, a dog park and a scenic 12-mile Lakefront Trail takes only a short walk north, leading travelers to long rows of fragrant cypress trees hanging over narrow sidewalks.

Commuters collide at Causeway Boulevard
Those who rely on public transportation for commutes and other trips can access Bonnabel Place's only bus route on Veteran's Boulevard. The rest of the residents drive. Because of the number of cars that cross the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway every day, commuters can expect frequent slowdowns on their way to I-10. "You're probably talking 70,000 cars a day," Hamrick says.

Things to consider
Crime does occur from time to time in Bonnabel Place but isn't much of a factor in everyday life. The neighborhood has a CAP Index score equal to the national average of 4. "It's a very safe neighborhood. However, we have seen criminals know that it's a safe neighborhood, so they do tend to break into cars," Hamrick says. "People leave their car doors unlocked because they forget that it can happen anywhere." Depending on the location of one's home, high water following rainstorms could also be a factor to consider.
