Friendly fishing community with rough-spun roots
The pleasant lakeside of Bucktown is not what it used to be. Originally a haven for fishermen and boatbuilders of the 19th century, today's culture is not as rough-and-tumble. Nobody really knows where the name comes from – if it's sourced from legends of Oliver "Buck" Wooley's deer hunting prowess or the "young bucks" who went there on weekends to engage in drunken, jazz-scored barfights. But the salty breezes blowing over its levees are a constant reminder that one thing is for sure: proximity to Lake Pontchartrain drives everything in Bucktown, from its seafood festival to its marinas and even its housing options. "What makes it unique is just the access to a ton of restaurants and the lakefront," says Realtor Ken Hamrick of Keller Williams Realty New Orleans, who once lived in the area. "It's just that family feel to it. You know that you're in a good place when you're in that area."

Increasing stock and square footage
While some midcentury cottages and ranchers survived Hurricane Katrina, receiving renovations in the years following, the storm did lead to a windfall of new construction too. "I knew that because it was very heavily populated by families, after all this flooding, what's going to happen is there'll be less houses, bigger properties," Hamrick says. "Sure enough, people would tear down their house and then sell the lot. And then people were buying that lot to add to their current lot." Original homes, which are typically smaller, tend to sell for between $200,000 and $400,000, while newer and renovated multi-story homes can sell for between $400,000 to just under $1 million. There's also been an uptick in new apartments, condos and townhouses along Lake Avenue, which can sell for anywhere between $200,000 to $900,000.

Lakeside jogs from Bucktown Marina
On a sunny, not too breezy day, some Bucktown residents take to the lake. Some stay inland, lacing up their running shoes for a scenic jog along the 12-plus mile-long Pontchartrain Lakefront Trail, waving to sunbathers and picnic goers overlooking them from atop the levees. Parks with lake access sit at both ends of the trail's Bucktown leg. Heading west leads to the Bonnabel Boat Launch, where local kids go for playground games and pet owners gather for off-leash time. To the east, Bucktown Marina offers a small slip for boaters with immediate lake access and a boardwalk for panoramic views of Lake Pontchartrain and its 23-mile-long Causeway.

Seafood markets and voodoo crawfish eggrolls
Once all knots are tied, head down to Lake Avenue for a blend of Big Easy traditions and new ideas. New Orleans Food & Spirits serves Creole classics like corn soup and shrimp gumbo, as well as inventive spins, such as voodoo crawfish egg rolls. Station 6, a newer restaurant, offers a laid-back evening of shareables such as smoked fish dip and soft-shell crabs. If they'd prefer to snag dinner themselves, residents can drift into Captain Sid's Seafood or any of the other seafood markets on Lake Avenue. For full pantry restocks, the locally owned Dorignac's Food Center is roughly a mile down Lake Avenue.

Car-dependent and bumpy roads
Public transportation does not service Bucktown. Although sidewalks in residential areas and on Lake Avenue afford walkability, most residents rely on a car for their needs. While Hamrick says that drivers can reach downtown New Orleans in around 10 minutes, "the roads around Bucktown are terrible, and they have always been."

Things to consider
High water is constant around New Orleans even after a small rainspout. Bucktown was among the fastest places to drain its Katrina floodwaters, so it's often more a nuisance than a problem. Even so, a drainage canal runs along the neighborhood's southern end, which can create hazardous conditions during high water. "Since Katrina, the [Army] Corps of Engineers has invested billions of dollars to reinforce the levees, but also to improve the drainage and pumping," Hamrick says. "But there are some lower-lying areas that, if you're not aware of it, you could get stuck in."
